THIS AWARD IS FOR PLACING AMONG THE TOP 8% OF PROGRAMS IN THE STATE FOR VISUAL ARTS.

TO PUT THAT IN PERSPECTIVE, THERE ARE ABOUT 1200 ELIGIBLE DISTRICTS IN THE STATE, AND ONLY 109 OF THOSE 1200 MET THE STANDARDS. MANSFIELD ISD WAS ONE OF THEM FOR 8%. THE TEACHERS YOU SAW COME UP ARE AWARDED THIS, AND THEY WERE SPONSORED BY THE VISUAL ART ADMINISTRATORS OF TEXAS, A DIVISION OF TAEA, RECOGNIZES THE DISTRICT AS A DEMONSTRATION, OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP IN PROMOTING THE ARTS, ACTIVE AND PARTICIPATION IN TAEA EVENTS, AND MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT WITH THEIR COMMUNITIES.

THIS PROGRAM, WHICH DATES BACK TO 1955, IDENTIFIES AND HONORS SOME OF THE MOST ACADEMICALLY TALENTED HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES.

SEMIFINALISTS ARE SELECTED BASED ON THEIR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE ON THE PSAT NMSQT TEST.

I CAN BARELY SAY THOSE LETTERS, MUCH LESS PERFORM LIKE THESE GUYS DID.

AND WE'RE ABOUT TO TAKE AWAY SOME OF YOUR AUTONOMY THAT YOU NORMALLY HAVE.

AND WE'RE DOING IT BECAUSE WE THINK IT'S WHAT'S BEST FOR STUDENT LEARNING IN THE END.

AND THEY GOT ON BOARD. THEY DID IT AND THEY MADE EVERYTHING WORK.

SO WE CAME OUT OF THAT PANDEMIC. WE GOT THE 88.

AND THEN THEY GAVE US A WHAT IF GRADE THAT SAME YEAR.

YOU SAW TONIGHT HOW WE RECOGNIZE OUR FINE ARTS STUDENTS, RIGHT? FINE ARTS, LEADERSHIP, ATHLETICS, CHOICE PROGRAMS. IT'S MUCH MORE THAN WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO SEE TONIGHT. AND SO I JUST DON'T WANT US TO LOSE SIGHT OF THE FACT THAT, AGAIN, WHAT WE DO HERE IS SPECIAL. IT'S BASED ON VISION 2030 AND THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES THAT WE HAVE GUIDING STATEMENTS THAT WE HAVE.

AND OUR JOB IS TO ENSURE THAT, AGAIN, THEY HAVE THAT OUR CAMPUSES HAVE THE SUPPORT SYSTEMS AGAIN, THE CURRICULUM THE TIME, THE FUNDING AND THE THINGS THAT THEY NEED TO MAXIMIZE STUDENT PERFORMANCE.

SO I JUST WANTED TO KIND OF SHARE THAT BEFORE WE GET GOING HERE. SO FIRST THING IS HOW DOES TO EVEN CALCULATE THESE RESULTS, HOW DO WE GET THESE LETTER GRADES. AND THEN DOMAIN THREE LOOKS AT CLOSING THE GAPS.

ACCORDING TO THIS DESIGN ENSURES THAT HIGH STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IS RECOGNIZED.

THE IMPACT OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE EDUCATORS IS VISIBLE, AND WE STAY FOCUSED ON STUDENTS WHO NEED THE MOST SUPPORT.

OKAY, SO THAT'S AGAIN THE KIND OF WHY IT'S DESIGNED THE WAY IT IS FOR STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT.

SO THE RATINGS THAT COME OUT OF OUR ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS, AGAIN, IT'S HOW THOSE STUDENTS PERFORM. AND THAT ONE DAY ENGLISH, MATH, SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES. BUT AGAIN, WE KNOW THAT OUR KIDS DO MORE THAN THAT.

WE KNOW THERE ARE VARIOUS WAYS TO SHOW WHETHER OR NOT STUDENTS ARE MASTERING CONTENT, SHOWING PROFICIENCY.

WHEN YOU LOOK AT BOTH FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE AND ELEMENTARY, AGAIN, YOU SEE, AGAIN, STAR IS PART OF THAT COMPONENT 100% FOR THE EARLY GRADES.

AND THEN HIGH SCHOOL. IT'S ONLY 40%. SO HIGH SCHOOL IS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT.

IT LOOKS AT STAR. AND AGAIN OUT OF THAT DOMAIN 140% IS THE SAME FORMULA.

STAR EOC SCORES. BUT ALSO WE LOOK AT CMR POINTS.

WHEN STUDENTS GRADUATE OUR SYSTEM, WE THE STATE IS LOOKING TO SEE WHETHER OR NOT THEY'VE MET A CMR CREDENTIAL, AND THAT'S COLLEGE CAREER OR MILITARY. SO THAT'S THE OTHER 40% AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL.

AND THEN THE REMAINING 20% AT THE HIGH SCHOOL FOR DOMAIN ONE IS OUR GRADUATION RATE.

AND WHEN WE LOOK AT OUR GRADUATION RATE, WE'RE REALLY LOOKING AT ALL STUDENTS WHO ENTER THE NINTH GRADE THEIR FIRST YEAR AND THEN FOUR YEARS LATER, HAVE THEY RECEIVED THAT DIPLOMA? IF THEY DON'T RECEIVE THAT HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA AFTER FOUR YEARS, THEN WE LOOK AT THE FIFTH YEAR RATE, AND THEN WE ALSO LOOK AT THE SIX YEAR RATE. SO WE'RE NOT DONE. EVEN THOUGH A STUDENT MAY NOT BE SUCCESSFUL IN FOUR YEARS.

THIS ALSO TAKES INTO ACCOUNT STUDENTS WHO DROP OUT.

SO AGAIN, THAT PERCENTAGE IS WE HAVE TO KNOW AGAIN WHETHER STUDENTS AGAIN CONTINUE ON TO ANOTHER INSTITUTION.

MAYBE IT'S OUT OF STATE, MAYBE OUT OF COUNTRY. WE HAVE TO DOCUMENT THAT TO ENSURE THAT, AGAIN, WE'RE TRACKING KIDS AND WE KNOW THAT THEY'VE GRADUATED AND AGAIN, EITHER THE FOURTH OR FIFTH OR SIXTH YEAR. BUT AGAIN, THAT'S HOW IT'S BROKEN DOWN FOR DOMAIN ONE.

FOR DOMAIN TWO, THERE ARE TWO PARTS TO THAT. BUT BASICALLY THIS HOW FAR STUDENTS HAVE COME.

ARE THEY SHOWING GROWTH? ARE THEY SHOWING THAT THEY HAVE GROWN FROM ONE ACADEMIC YEAR TO THE NEXT? SO IT'S YEAR TO YEAR GROWTH IN MATH AND READING.

AND FOR THE PART B, WHICH IS RELATIVE PERFORMANCE, WE'RE LOOKING AT HOW DO HOW DO SCHOOLS COMPARE TO OTHER SCHOOLS THAT LOOK LIKE THEM WITH SIMILAR, SIMILAR, DIFFERENT DEMOGRAPHICS. AND SO THIS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE FOR, FOR PART A GROWTH IS MEASURED THROUGH INDIVIDUAL STUDENT PROGRESS YEAR OVER YEAR. IT LOOKS AT HOW STUDENTS MOVE FROM ONE PERFORMANCE LEVEL TO THE NEXT, LIKE OF APPROACHES TO MEETS, AND THEN GIVES ADDITIONAL CREDIT FOR STUDENTS WHO ACCELERATE THEIR LEARNING, ESPECIALLY FOR STUDENTS WHO START BEHIND. AND AGAIN, WE GET EXTRA BONUS POINTS FOR KIDS WHO AGAIN DID NOT MEET, BUT THEN WE CAN MOVE THEM UP TO THE NEXT LEVEL AND SO ON.

SO AGAIN, THAT'S THE GROWTH MEASURE FOR PART A. FOR PART B, ONCE AGAIN WE ARE LOOKING AT CAMPUSES THAT LOOK LIKE OURS.

AGAIN, INDIVIDUAL CAMPUSES ARE READY AND LOOKED AT COMPARED TO OTHER SCHOOLS.

AND THAT HAPPENS YEAR TO YEAR. AND IT'S DIFFERENT EVERY YEAR BASED ON THE ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED KIDS THAT WE HAVE. FOR DOMAIN THREE IT'S CLOSING THE GAPS.

THIS AGAIN ENSURING THAT WE ARE SUPPORTING HISTORICALLY UNDERSERVED STUDENT GROUPS, ENSURING THAT THEY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

THIS DOMAIN ALIGNS WITH THE FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS THROUGH ESSA, EVERY STUDENT SUCCEEDS ACT.

AND REALLY WHAT IT LOOKS AT IS WE LOOK AT 18 DIFFERENT STUDENT GROUPS ACROSS ACHIEVEMENT, GROWTH, GRADUATION AND ENGLISH PROFICIENCY. BUT WHAT THE STATE HAS DONE IS PUT THEM INTO FOUR CATEGORIES.

AND YOU SEE THAT FIRST GREEN NUMBER ONE, ALL STUDENTS ARE COMBINED THERE.

THEN WE LOOK AT THE LOWEST PERFORMING STUDENT GROUP FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR.

THAT'S THE SECOND GROUP. AND THEN THE THIRD IS THE SECOND LOWEST PERFORMING GROUP FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR, AND THAT'S THE THIRD GROUP. THE HIGH FOCUS AREA INCLUDES SPECIAL ECONOMIC DISADVANTAGES THAT ARE NOT COUNTED, AND THOSE OTHER GROUPS, AND OUR HIGHLY MOBILE STUDENTS LIKE MIGRANT FOSTER STUDENTS, HOMELESS STUDENTS AS WELL.

SO HERE IS HOW WE DID THIS YEAR WITH OUR INDIVIDUAL CAMPUSES.

AND THEN TOTAL NUMBER OF CAMPUSES THIS YEAR IS SEVEN.

AND THEN WE HAVE TWO CAMPUSES AND NO F CAMPUSES THIS YEAR.

WELL, WE SAW THE MOST GROWTH AS WE SAW FROM A'S FROM B'S TO A'S.

SO WE SAW FIVE MORE ELEMENTARIES. SCORE A'S THIS YEAR.

MOVE UP A LETTER GRADE AT THE MIDDLE GRADES. WE HAD TWO ADDITIONAL A-RATED CAMPUSES.

AND AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH AGAIN, I'M REALLY PROUD OF BECAUSE AGAIN, I WAS A FORMER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF HIGH SCHOOL, IS THAT WE HAD SEVEN OUT OF EIGHT OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS, SCORED A RATE RATING THIS YEAR, AND THAT WAS ALL WORK THAT WE DID TWO, THREE YEARS AGO WORKING ON CMR AND IN TRYING TO MAXIMIZE THAT 40% ON THE CMR SIDE. SO THE ONE CAMPUS THAT DIDN'T GET AN A MISSED IT BY TWO POINTS.

SO WE'RE REALLY, REALLY HOPEFUL THAT THEY'RE GOING TO MEET MEET THAT THRESHOLD AT 90% OR HIGHER OR 90 POINT OVERALL GRADE.

OVERALL, 13 CAMPUSES SCORED BETWEEN 86 AND 89.

SO LOTS OF HIGH PERFORMING SCHOOLS, HIGH B'S THAT AGAIN, WE KNOW THAT AGAIN WITH THE RIGHT SUPPORT, THE RIGHT AGAIN INTENTIONALITY THAT WE CAN AGAIN CONTINUE TO INCREASE AND POSSIBLY GET A HIGHER SCORE NEXT YEAR.

FIVE CAMPUSES IMPROVED FROM C TO B THIS YEAR, WHICH IS AMAZING.

SO OUT OF THE 49 CAMPUSES THAT WE HAVE AS A DISTRICT, 46 EARNED A RATING.

GINGER WAS PAIRED WITH THELMA JONES AND OUR JERRY KNIGHT STEM ACADEMY STUDENTS.

THEY'RE ACTUALLY INCLUDED WITH THE WESTERN MIDDLE SCHOOL.

BEN BARBER STUDENTS. THEY DON'T GET A RATING.

EXCUSE ME? THE BEN BARBER GARIN TECH CENTER. BUT THOSE THE WORK THAT WE DO AT BEN BARBER THEN ADDS TO THE CMR TO OUR HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE DISTRICT.

SO AGAIN, OVERALL, 36 CAMPUSES IMPROVED OR MAINTAINED THEIR OVERALL SCORE 70%.

26 CAMPUSES MAINTAINED THEIR A RATING AND OR IMPROVED THEIR LETTER GRADES, SO 57% AGAIN IMPROVED OR MAINTAINED THEIR A AND THEN OVERALL 18 CAMPUSES IMPROVED THE LETTER GRADE 39%. WITH OUR RATINGS, WE ALSO GET CAMPUS DISTINCTIONS.

AND SO THIS SOMETHING, AGAIN, WE HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE TO DO IN THE LAST TWO YEARS BECAUSE OF THE FREEZE ON RATINGS.

BUT THAT COMPARISON GROUP, AGAIN, CAMPUSES CAN EARN DISTINCTIONS IF THEY PERFORM AT THE TOP QUARTILE OF THEIR OF THE PERFORMANCE OF THE CAMPUSES THAT LOOK SIMILAR TO THEM.

SO AGAIN, 100% THERE, 71% OF OUR INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS EARNED AT LEAST ONE DISTINCTION, 86% OF OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS EARNED AT LEAST ONE DISTINCTION.

WESTERN JERRY KNIGHT EARNED ALL SEVEN, SO THEY MAXED OUT ON ALL THOSE DISTINCTIONS.

AND 100% OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL HIGH SCHOOLS HAVE EARNED AT LEAST ONE DISTINCTION.

SO ONCE AGAIN, THIS ABOUT TEACHING AND LEARNING IN THE CLASSROOM.

AND WE SAY THE SUPPORT THAT WE PROVIDE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING THAT HAPPENS WHEN IT COMES TO STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IS THAT CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION, TIER ONE CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION. AND WHEN YOU'RE ABLE TO CHOOSE YOUR STUDENTS, YOU'RE ALSO ABLE TO NOT CHOOSE YOUR STUDENTS.

WHETHER IT'D BE KIDS WITH GREATER NEEDS, WHETHER IT'D BE KIDS WITH GREATER CHALLENGES, WHETHER IT'D JUST BE A KID WHO THEY THINK IS GOING TO BRING DOWN THEIR AVERAGE, THEY GET TO SAY WHO COMES TO THEIR SCHOOL AND WHO DOESN'T.

AND WHEN YOU GET TO HANDPICK YOUR KIDS, YOU KIND OF GET TO HANDPICK YOUR OUTCOMES.

AND SO WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT IS THAT AS A PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM, AS US HERE IN MANSFIELD ISD, WE DO THE EXACT OPPOSITE. THE AMAZING THING IS THAT OUR DISTRICT NOT ONLY TAKES ALL OF THOSE KIDS, BUT WE ARE PUBLICLY HELD ACCOUNTABLE TO THE OUTCOMES OF THOSE CHILDREN. AND SO OUR SCORES, GOOD OR BAD, ARE PUBLICLY REPORTED TO THE STATE, TO THE PARENTS AND TO OUR COMMUNITY AT LARGE.

AND WHAT'S REALLY AWESOME ABOUT PUBLIC EDUCATION IS THAT TRANSPARENCY ISN'T OPTIONAL, HONESTLY.

IT'S THE PROMISE OF A PUBLIC SCHOOL. WE PROMISE TO BE TRANSPARENT.

WE PROMISE TO BE ACCOUNTABLE TO WHAT'S HAPPENING.

AND WHILE OUR SCORES SHOW AMAZING PROGRESS, I'M BLOWN AWAY WHENEVER AS A NEW BOARD MEMBER, WHEN WE SIT IN THESE MEETINGS AND WE'RE SHOWN THIS DATA.

I KNOW WE DO ACCELERATED INSTRUCTION CAMPUSES, HOW OUR PARENTS AND HOW CAN PARENTS GET ENGAGED WITH THAT PROCESS WITH TEACHERS IN THE DISTRICT. SO JUST ENGAGE, FIND OUT, INQUIRE, RIGHT? ATTEND THE PARENT ENGAGEMENT EVENTS THAT WE HAVE.

JUST BE PART OF YOUR KID'S EDUCATION, YOU KNOW, AGAIN, COME TO THE CAMPUSES, BE INVOLVED, VOLUNTEER, RIGHT? ALL THE THINGS THAT WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO KNOW ABOUT US AND WHAT WE PROVIDE FOR THEIR CHILDREN.

BUT I WILL SAY THAT IN SOME CASES, WHEN WE LOOK AT CLOSING DOMAIN THREE AND CLOSING GAPS, THERE ARE SOME OF OUR PARENTS WHO CAN'T.

THEY'RE WORKING TWO FULL TIME JOBS. THEY'RE NOT ABLE TO AGAIN SIT DOWN WITH THEIR CHILDREN AND READ WITH THEM AT NIGHT.

I MEAN, SOME OF THOSE STUDENTS THAT WE SERVE ARE ACTUALLY WATCHING THEIR YOUNGER SIBLINGS AS WELL, WORKING PART TIME TO HELP, YOU KNOW, MAKE ENDS MEET, RIGHT? AND SO FOR US, THAT'S NOT GOING TO BE AN EXCUSE FOR US NOT TO HELP STUDENTS GROW AND LEARN.

WE KNOW THAT ADULT BEHAVIORS ARE WHAT MATTERS THE MOST IN THE TEACHER IN THE CLASSROOM MATTERS MOST.

AND SO WE ALWAYS FOCUS ON ADULT BEHAVIORS, ON WHAT WE CAN DO DIFFERENTLY TO CLOSE THESE GAPS, TO ENSURE OUR STUDENTS ARE MEETING GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS.

AND THAT'S REALLY WHAT IT'S ABOUT. HOLDING THE BAR HIGH, ENSURING THAT OUR TEACHERS KNOW WHAT THAT BAR LOOKS LIKE, AND THEN PROVIDING THOSE SUPPORT SCAFFOLDING WHERE WE NEED TO SCAFFOLD AND DIFFERENTIATING WHERE WE NEED TO DIFFERENTIATE. AND SO AGAIN, YES, THERE ARE THOSE AVENUES FOR PARENTS TO ENGAGE AND WE WANT THEM TO ENGAGE.

BUT OUR COMMITMENT IS THAT IT DOESN'T MATTER WHETHER THE PARENTS ARE INVOLVED OR NOT.

WE'RE COMMITTED TO ENSURING OUR KIDS ARE GROWING AND LEARNING.

AND THEN BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL, THEY CAN DO SOMETHING WITH THEIR LIVES, WHETHER THAT'D BE COLLEGE OR CAREER.

JUST AGAIN, AS WE WERE TALKING ABOUT DOMAIN THREE, I FAILED TO MENTION THAT I TOLD YOU HOW DIFFICULT IT WAS AND HOW MANY DISTRICTS ACROSS THE STATE WITH ENROLLMENT OF 25,000 OR HIGHER, THERE'S ONLY ONE DISTRICT THAT HAD A HIGHER DOMAIN SCORE THAN US, AND THEY HAD AN ECD RATE OF 6.1, AND WE'RE SITTING AT 48.2.

SO JUST AGAIN, THAT'S THE TESTAMENT TO THE WORK THAT EVERY KID DOES MATTER.

WE ARE LOOKING AT KID BY KID, UNIT BY UNIT, STANDARD BY STANDARD, GRADE LEVEL AT A TIME.
