MANSFIELD ISD HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF FORBES' BEST IN-STATE EMPLOYERS FOR THREE YEARS IN A ROW.
BUT THIS YEAR FOR THE FIRST TIME, WE HAVE RECEIVED A NATIONAL DISTINCTION HONOR FROM FORBES MAGAZINE.
THIS YEAR WE'VE BEEN NAMED TO THE FORBES LIST OF BEST AMERICAN MID-SIZED EMPLOYERS.
WE JOINED THE TOP ONE PERCENT OF EMPLOYERS ACROSS THE NATION WHO RECEIVED THIS PRESTIGIOUS RECOGNITION.
THE WAY THIS AWARD IS DETERMINED IS THERE'S A SURVEY THAT'S DISTRIBUTED THROUGHOUT THE NATION, SURVEYING APPROXIMATELY 45,000 EMPLOYEES IN ALL DIFFERENT FIELDS.
IN OUR CATEGORY IS FOR EMPLOYERS WHO HAVE 1000-5000 EMPLOYEES.
THE EMPLOYEES ARE ASKED TO RATE THEIR WILLINGNESS TO RECOMMEND THEIR OWN EMPLOYER TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY.
BASED ON THOSE RESPONDENTS' RECOMMENDATIONS, WE MADE THE TOP HALF OF THE 500 COMPANIES WHO WERE RECOGNIZED. YAY FOR US.
[APPLAUSE] NOW, WHILE WE ALL KNOW THAT MANSFIELD ISD IS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE, LEARN AND TEACH NOW WE'RE BEING RECOGNIZED ON A NATIONAL LEVEL.
SUPER EXCITED ABOUT THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT, I'D LIKE TO THANK THE BOARD AND ALL OF OUR STAFF WHO MADE THIS POSSIBLE.
[APPLAUSE] AT THIS TIME, IF WE HAVE ANY STUDENTS LEFT, I THINK WE LOST SOME OF OUR SUPERSTARS.
IF YOU'RE A STUDENT, IF MOM AND DAD, IF IT'S OKAY IF THEY'RE IN THE PHOTO, STUDENTS COME UP, BOARD MEMBERS CAME UP, STAFF MEMBERS AT FRONT.
WE'LL HAVE A GIANT PHOTO TO JUST RECOGNIZE THIS HONOR THIS EVENING.

>> THAT CONCLUDES THIS EVENING'S RECOGNITIONS.
>> WELL, THAT WAS ALWAYS THE BEST PART OF OUR MEETINGS AND I ENJOY TO SEE ALL THE KIDS BE SUCCESSFUL.
I DIDN'T HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TELL THE SUPERSTARS THAT THEY WERE RECEIVING THEIR TROPHIES A MONTH LATE DUE TO THE TALL GUYS THAT WERE STANDING UP HERE AWHILE AGO.
THEY WERE SOME OF THE ONES THAT WE CHECKED OUT EARLY THAT EVENING SO THAT WE CAN SEE THEM ALONG WITH TIMBER VIEW AND LEGACY HIGH-SCHOOLS TEAMS PLAY.
VERY PROUD OF ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.
WE WILL NOW MOVE ON TO ITEM 7, OUR DISCUSSION ITEMS,
[7. Discussion]
AND WE WILL START FIRST WITH ITEM 7.1, THE ELECTION OF THE ESC REGION 11 BOARD OF DIRECTORS.MAY I PLEASE RECEIVE A MOTION.
WE'RE NOT VOTING ON THAT TONIGHT, ARE WE?
>> YEAH. IT JUST FOR DISCUSSION.
>> DOES ANYBODY WANT TO DISCUSS IT? OR DID ANYBODY HAVE SOME INPUT THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?
>> WELL, I'M GOING TO SAY JAY THOMSON IS THE INCUMBENT AND I HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING NEGATIVE.
IT'S BEEN PRETTY QUIET, BEEN PRETTY POSITIVE, SO THAT'S WHAT I CAN SHARE.
[LAUGHTER] I'VE TAKEN SOME CLASSES OVER THERE AND IT'S BEEN RUN VERY EFFICIENTLY, AND I THINK THAT GOES TO THEIR LEADERSHIP.
I THINK HE'S DOING A GOOD JOB, BUT I DON'T KNOW HIM PERSONALLY.
I JUST KNOW MY EXPERIENCE ON THAT, SO I DON'T KNOW IF ANYBODY ELSE WANTS TO [OVERLAPPING]
>> MORE OF A WORKING EXPERIENCE?
>> GUYS, YOU HAVE [LAUGHTER] NOTHING ELSE?
>> I JUST HAVE QUESTION. WHEN DO RETURN BALANCE BY APRIL 5TH, IS THAT GOING TO BE ON THE NEXT CALLED MEETING AGENDA TO VOTE ON?
>> I BELIEVE. GO AHEAD, JULIE.

YOU CAN GO AHEAD AND FILL THEM OUT TONIGHT.

>> THE SECOND ITEM UP FOR DISCUSSION THIS EVENING IS OUR BOARD SELF-EVALUATION AND SCORECARD.
I'M GOING TO ASSUME YOU CAN TELL ME OTHERWISE THAT DEZ AND BIANCA, I KNOW TYPICALLY HAD THIS ONE OFF, SO DID YOU HAVE SOME DISCUSSION FOR US ON THAT?
>> YES. IF YOU REMEMBER, MS. TIGUE WAS GOING TO REVIEW HOW WE KEEP TRACK OF OUR MEETING MINUTES.
SHE'S COME UP WITH SOME GREAT IDEAS OF BREAKING UP HOW WE HAVE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT, AND WE MEASURE THAT AND OUR GOAL IS TO GET TO 40% STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT, BUT WE DO SO MUCH THAT IS STUDENT FOCUSED THAT SHE'S GIVEN SOME DIFFERENT IDEAS HOW TO BREAK THAT OUT.
THE TRACKER THAT WE HAD BEEN USING IN THE PAST WAS BASICALLY DESIGNED TO HELP DISTRICTS THAT WERE IN DIRE NEED OF HELP, AND ASSISTANCE, WHICH WE TOOK IT ON TO JUST SEE IF THEY COULD IMPROVE US AND MAKE US BETTER.
MS. TIGUE HAS WORKED THROUGH THAT TO SEE IF SHE COULD MAKE IT FIT OUR BOARD BETTER, AND SHE'S COME OUT WITH BREAKING IT UP INTO MEASURING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT, STUDENT FOCUSED, AND THEN STUDENT RECOGNITION, AND WE KEEP TRACK OF THOSE THREE DIFFERENT TIMES AND THEN LUMP IT TOGETHER.
I DON'T REALLY SUGGEST US CHANGING ANYTHING RIGHT NOW BECAUSE IT'S ALMOST APRIL, SO WE HAVE MAY AND JUNE, AND THEN WE CAN REDO IT GOING INTO THE NEW YEAR.
I'LL GET WITH YOU, JULIE, TO GO OVER THAT.
I'M KEEPING TRACK OF WHAT SHE TOLD ME TO GUIDE TONIGHT,
[00:45:02]
AND THEN MAYBE WE CAN ALL AND THE COMMITTEE CAN SIT DOWN AND GO OVER WITH HOW TO DO THAT GOING FORWARD.THAT'S THE UPDATE THAT I HAD FROM MS. TIGUE.
I DON'T KNOW IF SHE'S LISTENING, BUT SHE'S BEEN A FABULOUS HELP TO US IN HER KNOWLEDGE AND SHE'S THE WOMAN OF ALL KNOWLEDGE AND THEN SOME, SO APPRECIATE ALL HER HELP THAT SHE HAS GIVEN US ON THIS AND WORKING THROUGH IT.
SHE SPENT A LOT OF TIME ON BREAKING IT UP.
SHE WENT THROUGH AGENDAS AND REALLY TOOK A LOT OF TIME.
IF YOU'RE LISTENING, HOLLY, THANK YOU SO MUCH. THAT'S ALL I HAVE.
>> I'LL JUST GO REAL QUICK AND LET EVERYONE AN EXAMPLE OF WHERE WE HAVE TWEAKED THIS SYSTEM ACCORDING TO OUR DISTRICT AND THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL YEARS AGO.
BUT IS WHERE YOU ARE WANT TO KEEP YOUR MINUTES, AND MEETINGS FOCUSED OBVIOUSLY ON STUDENT OUTCOME AND OF STUDENT FOCUS JUST IN GENERAL.
WE STARTED COUNTING OUR RECOGNITIONS PORTION OF OUR AGENDA TOWARDS THAT.
THE REASON THAT IS, LIKE I SAID, IT'S JUST AN EXAMPLE HOW IT WORKS FOR OUR DISTRICT BECAUSE THAT IS AND WAS ONE OF OUR MAIN PRIORITIES AND GOALS FOR OUR STUDENTS, AND THAT'S PARTICIPATING IN SOME EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITY, WHETHER THAT BE A CLUB ON CAMPUS OR THE BAND, OR AS YOU SAW THE GUYS TONIGHT, THE BASKETBALL PLAYERS AND THE SYMPHONIC BAND, AND SO ORCHESTRA, AS WE CALL IT, I'M OLD SCHOOL, WE STILL SAY SYMPHONIC BAND.
ANYWAY, THAT WOULD JUST BE AN EXAMPLE, SO IF ANYBODY IS NOT CERTAIN WHAT WE MEAN BY THAT, WE DON'T MEAN TRYING TO TWEAK IT TO WHAT IT MAKES IT EASIER.
WE JUST MEAN TO MAKE IT GUIDED MORE TOWARDS WHAT WE HAVE VALUED FOR OUR STUDENTS. BIANCA, DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING.
>> I JUST FELT IT WAS NOTEWORTHY TO ACTUALLY CALL OUT OUR BOARD.
THIS WAS ALL NEW, AND WHEN WE CAME TOGETHER FOR THE TRAINING, EVERYONE AGREED ACROSS THE BOARD TO INSTITUTE EVEN LARGER NUMBER OF AMOUNTS AND QUALIFICATIONS AND GOALS, AND SO I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO THE BOARD AND THAT I REALLY FEEL IT'S A TESTAMENT TO MANSFIELD.
AGAIN, FROM FORBES TO OUR UIL OR EVEN OUR BASKETBALL, AND OF COURSE TO OUR ACADEMICS.
IT'S GOING TO BE STRAIGHT FROM THE TOP-DOWN, AND THEN RIGHT BACK UP. THAT'S GOOD.
>> I JUST WANT TO THANK BIANCA AND DEZ FOR WORKING SO HARD ON THIS.
WE ALL JUMPED ON BOARD, BUT YOU GUYS HAVE REALLY BEEN THE PEOPLE IN THE BACKGROUND THAT HAD PUT THIS ALTOGETHER, SO JUST A SHOUT OUT TO YOU GUYS FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK. THANK YOU.
>> YES. AGREED. DID ANYONE ELSE HAVE ANYTHING ELSE ON THIS TOPIC? MR. DAVIS.
IF YOU WOULD, FOR THE SAKE OF THE COMMUNITY, COULD ONE OF YOU MAYBE DESCRIBE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHO HOLLY IS? I WANT TO SAY WE'RE TAKING IT FOR GRANTED AS IF FOLKS KNOW.
>> I'M GOING TO TRY TO GET HER HISTORY RIGHT.
BUT AT ONE POINT IN TIME, SHE WAS OUR JENNIFER YOUNG.
SHE DID CURRICULUM INSTRUCTION AND MANY OTHER HATS.
THEN SHE'S CONSULTED WITH THIS SINCE SHE RETIRED, AND SHE'S HELPED.
SHE WAS SPEARHEADED BEHIND OUR SARAH GENDER GLUCOSE CENTER.
THAT WAS HER LITTLE BABY, THAT PRE-K ACADEMY.
BUT HER BIG THING WAS OUR CURRICULUM INSTRUCTION, AND SHE'S HAD HER HANDS IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS HERE, AND SO NOW SHE'S CONSULTS WITH OUR BOARD AND SHE DOES THAT AS A FAVOR TO COME BACK AND SHE LOVES US SO MUCH.
I THINK SHE'S ON THE SCHOOL BOARD NOW IN MIDLOTHIAN.
SHE STILL HASN'T GIVEN UP HER EDUCATION.
DOES THAT HELP? DOES THAT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION?
>> ANYONE ELSE? WITH THAT, WE WILL MOVE ON TO ITEM 8.
[8. Instructional Focus]
OUR INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS, DR. CANTU.>> YES. YOU GUYS WE HERE AND BELIEVED THAT WHAT GETS MEASURED, GETS DONE.
OUR COA, CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY PROCESS IS HOW WE MEASURE OURSELVES AND MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE DOING THE THINGS THAT WE SET OUT TO DO.
WE WANT TO HIGHLIGHT THAT FOR YOU ALL TONIGHT.
MS. YOUNG IS ALREADY THERE AND WE HAVE TWO OF OUR SITTING PRINCIPALS WHO ARE GOING TO SHARE WITH YOU THEIR COAS, AND MS. YOUNG IS GOING TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT WITH YOU JUST ABOUT THAT PROCESS IN GENERAL. MS. YOUNG?
>> THANK YOU, DR. CANTU. GOOD EVENING.
PRESIDENT WILSON, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, WE ARE EXCITED TONIGHT TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THE CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY PROCESS IN MANSFIELD ISD.
I HAVE WITH ME TWO AMAZING PRINCIPLES MIKO RIENS FROM THELMA JONES AND DR. MATT BROWN FROM SUMMIT AND HE'S GOT HIS CHEERING SQUAD WITH HIM.
HIS SON, HE MAY PARTICIPATE AS WELL.
BUT I'M GOING TO LET YOU HEAR FROM THEM ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE DOING ON THEIR CAMPUS.
BUT I WANT TO JUST SHARE SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION WITH YOU ON THE CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY.
AS A CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT, THE CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY IS A PROCESS THAT WE GO THROUGH AT THE CAMPUS LEVEL TO ENSURE THAT WE CAN REACH THE GUIDING STATEMENTS OF VISION 2030.
[00:50:04]
THE CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY WAS REALLY BORN OUT OF TWO BOOKS.THE FIRST ONE IS THE BOOK CALLED THE ONE THING, AND THE SECOND IS THE BOOK CALLED THE 4 DISCIPLINES OF EXECUTION.
THE PREMISE BEHIND THE BOOK, THE ONE THING IS YOU CAN'T CHASE TWO RABBITS AND CATCH BOTH OF THEM AND SO YOU REALLY HAVE TO BE DISCIPLINED AND IDENTIFYING WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT WORK ON YOUR CAMPUS TO MOVE KIDS FORWARD.
WE KNOW THAT THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS REALLY JUST BEING ABLE TO FOCUS ON ONE THING ONLY.
BUT THIS IS YOUR MOST IMPORTANT GOAL.
OUR CAMPUSES GO THROUGH A PROCESS WHERE THEY DO A ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS.
THEY LOOK AT THEIR DATA, THEY GET WITH THEIR TEACHERS AND THEIR STAFF AND THEY IDENTIFY THE ONE THING ON THEIR CAMPUS THAT IF THEY FOCUS ON AND THEY IMPROVE OVER TIME, IT WILL MOVE KIDS FORWARD.
THIS QUOTE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE IS REALLY TELLING.
IT SAYS EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS HAPPEN ONLY WHEN YOU GIVE THE BEST YOU HAVE TO BECOME THE BEST YOU CAN BE AT YOUR MOST IMPORTANT WORK.
THE WHOLE CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY, ONE THING IS THE PREMISES IDENTIFYING THAT MOST IMPORTANT WORK.
THE 4 DISCIPLINES OF EXECUTION TALK ABOUT THE WHIRLWIND.
WE ALL HAVE TO DO LIST AT WORK, AND YOU GO INTO THE OFFICE IN THE MORNING AND YOU GET YOUR COFFEE OR YOUR DIET COKE AND YOU START YOUR TO-DO LIST AND THEN THE WHIRLWIND HAPPENS AND SO THAT DISTRACTS YOU FROM EVERYTHING ELSE.
WHAT WE TRY TO REALLY PREACH AND HONE IN ON IS THAT MOST IMPORTANT THING, CAN'T GET CAUGHT UP IN THE WHIRLWIND.
AS A PRINCIPAL OF A CAMPUS, AS A LEADER OF A DEPARTMENT, YOU KNOW YOUR MOST IMPORTANT WORK AND YOU KNOW THAT WILDLY IMPORTANT GOAL AND THAT'S WHAT YOU HAVE TO FOCUS ON IN SPITE OF ANY CRAZINESS THAT HAPPENS THROUGHOUT OUR DAYS.
THE 4 DISCIPLINES OF EXECUTION REALLY FOCUS ON FOUR DIFFERENT PRINCIPLES.
WE'VE IDENTIFIED WHAT'S MOST IMPORTANT, AND THAT'S WHAT WE PUT OUR TIME AND ENERGY INTO ACCOMPLISHING.
THE SECOND IS THE DISCIPLINE OF LEVERAGE.
WE ALL BELIEVE THAT WHEN YOU INCREASE OR IMPROVE ADULT BEHAVIOR, YOU IMPROVE STUDENT OUTCOMES.
AS A DEPARTMENT AND AS A CAMPUS, WE DON'T TALK ABOUT, WELL, WHAT ARE THE KIDS GOING TO DO? WE TALK ABOUT WHAT ARE THE ADULTS GOING TO DO IN THE BUILDING TO ENSURE THAT KIDS LEARN AT HIGH LEVELS.
THE DISCIPLINE OF LEVERAGE IS REALLY FOCUSED ON LOOKING AT ADULT BEHAVIOR.
THE THIRD DISCIPLINE IS ENGAGEMENT.
WHAT GETS MEASURED, GETS DONE AND SO THIS IS REALLY ABOUT PROVIDING A SCOREBOARD, A DASHBOARD TO SHOW YOUR RESULTS.
THEN THE LAST PART IS WHAT WE'RE REALLY GOING TO TALK ABOUT TONIGHT, WHICH IS THAT CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY.
THE CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY IN MISD IS FOUR TIMES A YEAR, WE GET TOGETHER WITH THE PRINCIPALS AND THEY REPORT OUT ON THEIR ONE THING.
THAT WHOLE MEETING FOLLOWS A RHYTHM AND THERE'S A STRUCTURE TO THE MEETING.
WE TALK ABOUT THEIR PREVIOUS CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY.
IF WE GAVE THEM ANY COMMITMENTS TO FOLLOW THROUGH ON, THEN THEY TALK ABOUT HOW THEY'RE DOING IN TERMS OF THEIR LEAD MEASURES.
ARE THE ADULTS IN THE BUILDING DOING WHAT WE SAID THEY WERE GOING TO DO? THEN HOW DOES THAT BEHAVIOR IMPACT RESULTS? THEN WE ALL HAVE CONVERSATION ABOUT PROGRESS.
WE LIST COMMITMENTS TO FOLLOW UP ON, ON THE NEXT MEETING.
AGAIN, THIS RHYTHM OR THIS CYCLE OF CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY HAPPENS FOUR TIMES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
TONIGHT WE'RE GOING TO FOCUS ON CAMPUSES AND THEIR WORK WITH THE CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY.
BUT I WANT YOU TO KNOW AS A CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT, COA IS A PART OF WHAT WE DO, WHETHER IT'S AT THE CAMPUS LEVEL OR THE DEPARTMENT LEVEL.
EVERY MONTH IN THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT, YOU HAVE AN EXECUTIVE COUNCIL ACCOUNTABILITY AND WE DO THE SAME THING.
WE HAVE A CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY WHERE WE HAVE A DASHBOARD AND WE REPORT OUT ON THOSE LEAD MEASURES AND WE MONITOR GROWTH THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
EVEN THOUGH WE'RE FOCUSING ON OUR CAMPUSES TONIGHT, THIS IS A DISTRICT PROCESS THAT WE FOLLOW IN ALL DEPARTMENTS AS WELL.
WHAT I'M GOING TO DO IS TURN IT OVER TO MIKO RINES AND SHE'S GOING TO TALK ABOUT THELMA JONES ELEMENTARY AND THEIR ONE THING, AND WHAT I'VE ASKED THE PRINCIPLES TO DO TONIGHT IS TO GIVE THEIR COA PRESENTATION JUST LIKE THEY WOULD NORMALLY DO IN OUR COA MEETINGS.
SHE'S GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE PREVIOUS MONTH AND COMMITMENTS AND SO YOU'RE LIKE, WHAT IS SHE TALKING ABOUT? THIS IS THE EXACT PRESENTATION THAT SHE GAVE, QUARTER 3, WHICH WE DID IN FEBRUARY.
AT THIS TIME I'LL TURN IT OVER TO MIKO.
>> GOOD EVENING, BOARD PRESIDENT WILSON, BOARD MEMBERS, DR. CANTU, AND CABINETS.
[00:55:01]
I'M GOING TO PRESENT ONE QUARTER 3 CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THELMA JONES ELEMENTARY.BASED ON FEEDBACK FROM QUARTER 2, I DID NOT HAVE ANY COMMITMENTS FOR QUARTER 3.
OUR ONE THING AT THELMA JONES IS TEACHERS WILL USE SMALL-GROUP MATH INSTRUCTION TO IMPROVE OVERALL'S STUDENT PERFORMANCE.
IF I CAN JUST TAKE YOU DOWN THE PATH AS TO HOW WE GOT TO SMALL GROUP MATH INSTRUCTION.
THIS IS ACTUALLY OUR SECOND YEAR THAT WE ARE DOING SMALL GROUP MATH INSTRUCTION.
WE STARTED WITH LOOKING AT OUR DATA AND DOING OUR ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS.
ON MY CAMPUS, I DO HAVE A LEADERSHIP TEAM THAT INCLUDES TEACHERS FROM ALL THE GRADE LEVELS, MY INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT STAFF, AS WELL AS THE REST OF MY ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM.
WE SIT AND WE REALLY DIG THROUGH THE DATA TO DETERMINE WHERE WE HAVE AN AREA OF OPPORTUNITY AS I LIKE TO CALL IT.
JUST BASED ON THAT, WE DECIDED THAT WE WANTED TO FOCUS ON MATH BECAUSE WE HAD INVESTED SO MUCH IN READING OVER THE YEARS AND WE HAD PRACTICES THAT WE REALLY WORKING.
BUT IN MATH, WE WERE NOT MAKING THE SAME PROGRESS AT THE SAME RATE AS WE WERE IN READING.
WE WANT IT TO FOCUS ON SMALL-GROUP MATH BECAUSE SMALL-GROUP READING WORKS.
WE THOUGHT LET'S GIVE IT A TRY.
THE IDEA LAST YEAR WAS TO GET THE TEACHERS DOING SMALL-GROUP MATH.
WE WANT IT TO WORK OUR WAY UP TO THREE TIMES A WEEK OF SMALL GROUP MATH INSTRUCTION.
ALSO REALLY PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT THE STUDENTS WERE DOING WHO WERE NOT AT THE TEACHER TABLE.
THE QUALITY OF ACTIVITIES THAT OTHER STUDENTS WERE WORKING ON.
AS THE STUDENTS CAME TO THE TABLE, THE IDEA FOR SMALL GROUP MATH INSTRUCTION WAS THEY WOULD BE WORKING ON GRADE-LEVEL CONTENT BASED ON OUR SCOPE AND SEQUENCE, BUT THEY WOULD GET IT IN A WAY THAT SUPPORTED THEIR NEEDS.
IF WE HAD A GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO WERE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS, MAYBE THEY NEEDED TO FOCUS A LITTLE BIT HEAVIER ON THE VOCABULARY.
IF WE HAD A GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO UNDERSTOOD THE CONCEPT THE FIRST TIME AROUND, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO TO EXTEND THEIR LEARNING? JUST WHATEVER THEY NEED, THE GROUPS ARE FLUID BECAUSE IT REALLY DEPENDS ON WHAT THEY NEED, SO IT MAY CHANGE WEEKLY OR BY UNIT.
ONCE WE DETERMINE OUR ONE THING, WE HAVE TO DECIDE HOW WE'RE GOING TO MONITOR IF IT'S WORKING.
OUR FIRST MEASURE IS OUR LEAD FOR THE FIDELITY MEASURES.
AS YOU CAN SEE, WE HAVE TWO THERE, WE HAVE MATH WALK-THROUGH FORUMS AND PLC, WEEKLY LESSON PLANNING COMMITMENTS.
WITH THE FIDELITY MEASURES, THIS IS ALL ABOUT ADULT BEHAVIOR.
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO PUT IN PLACE TO ENSURE THAT WE ARE MAKING PROGRESS? WHAT ADULT BEHAVIORS HAVE TO CHANGE SO THAT WE'RE SUCCESSFUL ON OUR ONE THING? AGAIN, MATH SMALL GROUP FORM, WALK THROUGH FORUMS, AND IN OUR PLC LESSON PLANNING, OUR LEA PERFORMANCE MEASURES.
WE WANT IT TO PARTICIPATE IN DISTRICT-LEVEL QUICK CHECKS, WHICH ARE OPTIONAL, BUT WE THOUGHT LET'S CHOOSE SOME THAT WE THOUGHT OUR STUDENTS NEEDED.
ALSO OUR BEGINNING AND MIDDLE OF THE YEAR MAP, MATH FOR THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE AND THEN OUR LAG MEASURES, THAT IS THE END.
HOW DO WE DO AFTER FOLLOWING THIS PROCESS FOR A YEAR, MAKING ADJUSTMENTS ALONG THE WAY, WHICH IS WHAT THOSE LEAP PERFORMANCE MEASURES ALLOW US TO DO.
HOW DID WE DO IS THE SUMMARY, HOW DO WE DO AT THE END? WE LOOK AT STAR DATA AS WELL AS OUR END-OF-THE-YEAR MAP.
AS I TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MY FIDELITY LEAD MEASURES, SO PLC, AS YOU CAN SEE, IT'S PLC COMMITMENT.
PLCS ARE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES.
WE ARE IN OUR SECOND YEAR OF REALLY IMPLEMENTING PLCS ON MY CAMPUS.
WE DO PLCS ONCE A WEEK WITH EACH TEAM.
WHEN WE COME TO PLC, IS THIS ALL ABOUT KIDS WERE LOOKING AT WHAT ARE KIDS LEARNING? WE'RE TALKING ABOUT DATA.
WE'RE CELEBRATING, WE'RE LOOKING AT WHERE WE NEED TO GROW.
WE MAKE COMMITMENTS BASED ON FOUR QUESTIONS.
WHAT DO WE WANT STUDENTS TO KNOW AND DO? HOW WILL WE KNOW IF THEY'RE DOING IT? HOW DO WE RESPOND IF THEY'RE NOT GETTING IT? HOW DO WE RESPOND WHEN THEY HAVE ALREADY LEARNED IT? WE USE THOSE FOUR QUESTIONS TO PRETTY MUCH DRIVE INSTRUCTION FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEK AND ALSO MAKE COMMITMENTS.
AS YOU LOOK UP HERE, THIS IS OUR FIRST FIDELITY MEASURE.
OUR TEACHERS DOING WHAT THEY SAID THEY WOULD DO.
ARE THEY FOLLOWING THROUGH ON THOSE COMMITMENTS? AS YOU CAN SEE, FOR QUARTER TWO 93 PERCENT OF THE TIME,
[01:00:01]
WE WALKED IN CLASSROOMS AND YES, THEY WERE FOLLOWING THROUGH ON THE COMMITMENTS AND DOING WHAT THEY SAID THEY WOULD DO.OUR SECOND FIDELITY MEASURE IS OUR WALK-THROUGH FORM.
THIS WAS DEVELOPED WITH TEACHERS, BUT THE BIGGEST PART OF THIS WALK-THROUGH FORM, WE DECIDED THAT WE WANTED TO USE THE EIGHT LOOK FOR OUR BEST PRACTICES PROVIDED TO US BY THE MATH DEPARTMENT.
WE DECIDED THAT WE WANTED TO SEE AT LEAST FIVE OF THOSE THINGS HAPPENING WHEN WE DID WALKTHROUGHS.
THEY INCLUDE THINGS LIKE OUR KIDS USING VOCABULARY.
OUR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS HAVING RICH CONVERSATIONS ABOUT MATH IS THE TEACHER MODELING WHAT THE STUDENTS ARE THINKING? ARE THEY USING SPECIFIC STRATEGIES? DO THEY HAVE MANIPULATIVES, OR IS THERE EVIDENCE OF STUDENT WORK? JUST BEST PRACTICES THAT SHOULD BE HAPPENING AND ALL MATH CLASSES.
AS YOU CAN SEE, 87% OF THE TIME IN THIS QUARTER, WE DID SEE FIVE TO EIGHT OF THOSE THINGS HAPPENING.
ABOUT 10% AT A TIME WE ONLY SAW THREE TO FOUR OF OUR LOOK FOURS AND 3% AT A TIME WE SAW ZERO TO TWO OF THOSE LOOK FOURS.
NOW, AS I'LL GO INTO OUR LEAD PERFORMANCE MEASURES, AGAIN, THIS RIGHT HERE, THESE ARE OUR CHECKPOINTS.
ARE WE ON TRACK BASED ON WHAT WE HAVE IN PLACE? DO WE NEED TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO WHAT WE'RE DOING? THESE ARE WAYS THAT WE DETERMINE THAT.
THE FIRST LEAD PERFORMANCE MEASURE, OUR DISTRICT, QUICK CHECKS, THESE ARE BASED ON ESSENTIAL STANDARDS.
ESSENTIAL STANDARDS ARE BASICALLY WHAT WE SAY STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW TO HELP THEM BE SUCCESSFUL GOING INTO THE NEXT GRADE.
AS YOU CAN SEE, WE DID 3.7A, 3.8A THE FIRST ONE WAS ON FRACTIONS, WHICH IS HISTORICALLY PRETTY TOUGH FOR STUDENTS.
THIS WAS FRACTIONS ON A NUMBER LINE AND THEN 3.8A WAS SUMMARIZING DATA FOR GRAPHS.
WE HAVE A THRESHOLD OF 50% OF STUDENTS.
50% OF THE STUDENTS DO NOT PASS THAT ASSESSMENT.
WE KNOW THAT WE NEED TO DO A RETEACH.
YOU CAN SEE FOR 3.7A WE DID A RETEACH AND STUDENTS ACTUALLY PASSED AT 71%.
FOR THAT 52%, THAT NUMBER IS STILL LOW, BUT IT WAS A LITTLE BIT OVER OUR THRESHOLDS.
IN SITUATIONS LIKE THIS, WE DO BRING THIS TO PLCS, LOOK AT THE DATA AND DETERMINE WHAT WE NEED TO DO, WHETHER IT'S PUSHING SOME OF THESE ACTIVITIES INTO INTERVENTION, USING PROGRESS MONITORING, WORKING WITH OUR TUTORS, OR USING IT AND EMBEDDING IT IN JUST NUMERACY ROUTING IS AT THE START OF EACH LESSON.
FOR OUR SECOND LEAD PERFORMANCE MEASURE.
WE LIKE TO USE MAP PROJECTED PROFICIENCY IS ON STAAR-MATH DOES GIVE US AN IDEA OF WHERE STUDENTS MAY PERFORM FOR STAAR, I'M SORRY.
IF YOU WOULD TAKE A LOOK AT THE MEETS COLUMN, OUR BENCHMARK WAS 29%.
AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, 29% OF OUR STUDENTS WERE ACTUALLY AT MEETS.
WE DECIDED I FEEL LIKE IT'S A PRETTY LOFTY GOAL, BUT ALSO WE LIKE TO SET THE STANDARDS PRETTY HIGH ON MY CAMPUS.
WE DECIDED BY THE END OF THE YEAR WE WOULD HAVE 50% OF OUR STUDENTS AT MEATS.
OUR MIDDLE-OF-THE-YEAR RAMP-UP WAS TO GET THEM TO 40%.
AS YOU CAN SEE, WE EXCEEDED THAT BY SIX PERCENTAGE POINTS.
WE'RE VERY CLOSE OUR GOAL AND I HOPE WE CAN EXCEED IT.
THIS SLIDE MAKES ME EXTREMELY HAPPY.
WHEN WE THINK ABOUT MAP, THAT ASSESSMENT, THE BEST PART OF IT IS THAT IT'S REALLY ABOUT STUDENT GROWTH AND THAT REALLY IS WHAT WE WANT TO DO.
WE WANT TO GROW STUDENTS BY YEAR MORE EACH YEAR.
THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS THAT TYPICALLY MEET OR EXCEED THEIR GROWTH IS SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 40 AND 60%.
AS YOU CAN SEE, MY THIRD GRADERS WHERE IT'S 71%.
THAT WAS A HUGE CELEBRATION ON OUR CAMPUS.
WE WERE VERY PLEASED AS 71% OF OUR STUDENTS MET OR EXCEEDED THEIR EXPECTED GROWTH FOR THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR MAP.
THAT'S FROM BEGINNING TO MIDDLE, HOW MUCH DID THEY GROW? I'LL GO THROUGH FOURTH GRADE QUICKLY.
WE TOOK A COUPLE OF QUICK CHECKS BASED ON ESSENTIAL STANDARDS.
THEY WERE AT 66% ON E AND F, AND THIS WAS FRACTIONS AS WELL.
AND AGAIN IN FRACTIONS THIS TIME THEY WERE COMPARING FRACTIONS, SO THEY SEEM TO DO A LITTLE BIT BETTER THERE.
FOR THEIR SECONDLY PERFORMANCE MEASURE,
[01:05:04]
WHICH IS THEIR PROJECTED PROFICIENCY ON STAAR.NOW WHAT WAS REALLY COOL IS THE THIRD GRADERS WHO ARE NOW FOURTH GRADERS, WE'RE AT 60% MEETS ON STAAR AS THIRD GRADERS.
NATURALLY, WE WANTED THEM TO MAINTAIN THAT AS FOURTH GRADERS OR EVEN EXCEED IT.
WHEN THEY STARTED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, THEY WERE AT 47% MEETS AND AS YOU CAN SEE, WE ACTUALLY WERE NEAR AGO.
WE DIDN'T GET QUITE TO WHERE WE WANT IT TO BE, WHICH WAS 53%, BUT WE WERE ONLY AT 49%.
NOT A LOT OF GROWTH THERE, WHICH GAVE US AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO BACK AND LOOK AND SEE WHERE WE NEED IT TO BETTER SUPPORT STUDENTS.
ANOTHER REALLY COOL THING ABOUT MAP IS IT WILL TELL YOU IF STUDENTS ARE HIGH PERFORMERS BUT SHOWING LOW GROWTH.
WE DID NOTICE THAT THAT WAS PART OF OUR ISSUE.
LIKEWISE, OUR STUDENTS WHO WERE LOW PERFORMING IN LOW GROWTH, WE WERE ABLE TO ADDRESS THEIR NEEDS.
BUT I DO WANT TO MENTION WE TOOK AN INTERIM ASSESSMENT AT THE END OF FEBRUARY, AND SO I DID NOT HAVE THIS DATA AT THE TIME OR THE DATA FOR INTERIM ASSESSMENT.
BUT OUR PROJECTIONS FOR MEETS WAS 56%.
WE WERE MUCH CLOSER TO OUR END-OF-YEAR GOAL THAN WE WERE WHEN TOOK THE MAP ASSESSMENT.
IN SPITE OF US NOT MEETING OUR GOAL FOR THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR, WE STILL HAD 56% OF OUR STUDENTS TO MEET OR EXCEED GROWTH.
AGAIN, ANOTHER AREA TO CELEBRATE OUR STUDENTS.
I JUST WANT TO SHARE A CAMPUS HIGHLIGHTS, SO WE ARE A TITLE ON CAMPUS AND WE SET HIGH EXPECTATIONS.
I KNOW DISTRICT LEADERSHIP DOES NOT EXPECT ANYTHING LESS FROM US.
BUT IT'S ALWAYS A JOY WHEN I CAN COME INTO COA AND CELEBRATE THAT WE DID MEET THOSE EXPECTATIONS THAT WE SET FOR OURSELVES.
WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT RIGHT NOW IS PROGRESS LEARNING.
THIS IS AN ASSESSMENT THAT ALL OF OUR KINDERGARTEN, FIRST, AND SECOND-GRADE STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT TOOK IN DECEMBER.
AS YOU CAN SEE, OUR GOAL IS ALWAYS TO BE RIGHT WHERE THE DISTRICT IS OR EXCEED WHERE THE DISTRICT IS.
IF YOU LOOK AT OUR KINDERGARTEN GROUP, THEY WERE THREE POINTS BELOW DISTRICT AVERAGE.
BUT OUR FIRST AND SECOND-GRADE GROUPS, THEY EXCEEDED THE DISTRICT AVERAGE, NOT BY A LOT, BUT WE DID.
WE'LL TAKE IT WE WILL CELEBRATE ALL OF THE LITTLE CELEBRATIONS THERE.
WE DEFINITELY KNOW THAT IT STARTS WITH FIRST AND SECOND.
IT'S ENSURING THAT OUR STUDENTS AND THIRD AND FOURTH ARE SUCCESSFUL.
THAT WAS SOMETHING I WANTED TO SHARE AND TO CELEBRATE.
AT THE END OF OUR PRESENTATION, WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO ASK FOR SUPPORT COMING OUT FROM QUARTER TWO I ACTUALLY ASK FOR SUPPORT FROM OUR MATH DEPARTMENT AND FROM OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT.
JUST REALLY SUPPORT IN WORKING WITH TEACHERS AND MAKING SURE THAT WE WERE ON TRACK.
THEY WOULD COME TO WALKS GIVING US SUPPORT IN JUST SOME BEHAVIORS THAT WE WERE SEEING WITH OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS AS WELL AS THINGS THAT WE CAN DO TO HELP THEM GROW AS WELL AND I WAS GIVEN ALL THAT SUPPORT AND I'M STILL RECEIVING IT.
I DECIDED NOT TO BE GREEDY AND I DID NOT ASK FOR SUPPORT IN QUARTER THREE.
>> MIKO DOES A FABULOUS JOB AT THELMA JONES AND WE ARE REALLY APPRECIATIVE OF HER LEADERSHIP.
AT THIS TIME WE'RE GOING TO TURN IT OVER AND NOW LOOK AT A HIGH SCHOOL EXAMPLE WITH MATT BROWN AT SUMMIT.
>> GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT WOODROW WILSON, DR. CANTU, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD EXECUTIVE COUNCIL.
I APPRECIATE THE OPPORTUNITY TO STAND IN FRONT OF YOU AND SHOW YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT WE'RE DOING AT SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL IN TERMS OF HURRICANES ACCOUNTABILITY.
BEFORE I START THOUGH, I WANT TO TURN YOUR ATTENTION TO THE BACK HERE.
THE REAL MEMBERS OF THIS WORK THAT PEOPLE THAT DO THIS WORK EVERY DAY ARE SITTING IN THE ROOM AND I'M REALLY THANKFUL AND BLESSED THAT THEY SHOWED UP TONIGHT BECAUSE I SAID I WANT YOU TO COME AND BE RECOGNIZED A LITTLE BIT.
SO WE HAVE OUR ENGLISH ONE TEAM IN THE BACK.
[APPLAUSE] AND THEN OVER HERE ON THIS SIDE, SOMEONE WHO PROBABLY DOESN'T GET THE ATTENTION OR THE RECOGNITION THEY NEED, OUR INSTRUCTIONAL SPECIALIST, CHRISTINA WIEGAND IS SITTING OVER HERE.
[APPLAUSE] AND IN THIS GROUP OF EDUCATORS, ALONG WITH MR. MURDERER AND MANY OTHER PEOPLE, REALLY THIS IS THE WORK THEY DO DAY IN AND DAY OUT.
I SHOW YOU A SNAPSHOT, BUT IT'S THEIR COMMITMENT TO THE PROCESS THAT MAKES THIS REALLY WORK IN OUR CAMPUS.
SO THANK YOU GUYS FOR BEING HERE.
AND DON'T CALL ME A LIAR. JUST KIDDING.
[01:10:01]
SO WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY COMMITMENT FROM QUARTER 2.WE HAD A PRETTY GOOD FIRST QUARTER AND SECOND QUARTER, AND SO WE DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING WE HAD TO CHANGE OR FIX.
AT SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL, WE HAVE THREE BELIEFS AND THEY REALLY DRIVE THE WORK, WE HAVE.
SO OUR FIRST BELIEF IS THAT WE BELIEVE THE ONLY WAY TO CAPTURE OUR CAPTURE KIDS MIND IS TO CAPTURE THEIR HEART.
THE SECOND BELIEF IS THAT NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE, WHERE YOU COME FROM WHEN YOU WALK ACROSS THE DOORS OF SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL, WE BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN LEARN AT HIGH LEVELS.
AND THE THIRD ONE IS THAT WE BELIEVE THAT WE CAN ONLY DO THAT WORK TOGETHER.
IT'S NOT AN ISOLATED INDIVIDUAL ACCOMPLISHMENT.
WE ALL HAVE TO DO THE WORK TOGETHER.
SO I LOVED THIS ONE THING THAT OUR GUIDING COALITION MET IN JULY AND FOR ABOUT A WHOLE DAY AND DEVELOPED BECAUSE IT REALLY ENCAPSULATES THE PROCESS AND THE BELIEFS OF THE CAMPUS.
SO AT SUMMIT, WE COMMITTED THIS YEAR IN OUR ENGLISH 1 AND IN OUR ENGLISH 2 AND REALLY ACROSS THE CAMPUS.
BUT TO FEATURE IN THESE TWO AREAS ARE TEACHERS AND THEIR ABILITY TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT TARGETED INTERVENTION AND ENRICHMENT DURING THAT INSTRUCTIONAL TIME WITH FIDELITY.
AND THIS IS A REALLY COMMON PRACTICE AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL WHEN YOU'RE BEGINNING TO TEACH THOSE EARLY LITERACY SKILLS AND YOU CAN TARGET THOSE INTERVENTION SKILLS.
EVEN AT THE INTERMEDIATE LEVEL, THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, SOMETIMES AT THE MIDDLE, AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, IT GETS A LITTLE HARDER TO DO SOME OF THAT WORK.
SO THEY REALLY STEPPED OUT IN FRONT AND SAID LIKE WE'RE COMMITTED TO BELIEVING THAT YOU CAN LEARN THAT ALL AT HIGH LEVELS AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE IT HAPPENS.
SO THAT'S WHERE THIS WORK COMES FROM.
WHEN WE MEASURE THIS WORK, WHAT I HAVE TO TALK ABOUT AS OUR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY AND THE FACT THAT THIS ENGLISH 1 PLC GETS TOGETHER 2-3 TIMES A WEEK.
AND THEY REALLY LOOK AT STUDENT LEARNING AND THE OUTCOMES THAT STUDENTS ARE MAKING.
AND THEY MAKE ADJUSTMENTS IN THEIR INSTRUCTION TO ENSURE THAT ALL KIDS HAVE THE ACCESS AND THE ABILITY TO LEARN IT AT A HIGH LEVEL.
AND IT DOESN'T JUST HAPPEN ONCE.
IT HAS TO HAPPEN ON MULTIPLE PROGRESSIONS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
SO WHEN THEY'RE DOING THAT WORK, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE WANT TO BE VERY INTENTIONAL AT IS ENSURING THAT WHAT WE TALK ABOUT ACROSS THE TEAMS IN TERMS OF THE DELIVERY OF THAT INTERVENTION, THAT IT'S HAPPENING WITH FIDELITY, AND THAT IT'S IN SYNC WITH WHAT WE WANT IT TO LOOK IN THE CLASSROOMS. AND SO OUR TEACHERS SPEND TIME DEVELOPING BOTH INTERVENTION AND ENRICHMENT BECAUSE WE HAVE TWO TYPES OF LEARNERS.
WE HAVE THE KIDS WHO COME IN CLASS AND THEY GET THE FIRST ROUND OF INSTRUCTION AND THEY'RE NOT QUITE THERE.
AND THEN WE HAVE KIDS THAT COME IN AND THEY GET THAT ROUND OF INSTRUCTION AND THEY MASTER IT VERY QUICKLY AND THEY NEED SOMETHING ELSE TO DO AS WELL.
AND SO THEY'RE INTENTIONAL ABOUT BUILDING THAT.
AND THEN WE'RE INTENTIONAL ABOUT WALKING THOSE CLASSROOMS AND LOOKING AT HOW THAT WORKS AND GIVE ME SOME FEEDBACK ON THAT.
THE OTHER PART THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT IN OUR SECOND LEAD FIDELITY MEASURE IS CALIBRATING THOSE MATERIALS BECAUSE A LOT OF TIMES WHEN YOU'RE BUILDING INTERVENTION AND ENRICHMENT, YOU HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU PICK AND USE AND MAKE SURE THAT IT MEETS THE STANDARD THAT MISD HAS SET IN IN TERMS OF CALIBRATION.
AND SO EVERY ADMINISTRATOR GETS PUT THROUGH A PROCESS OF GOING THROUGH CURRICULUM AUDIT TRAINING, AND WE LEARN ABOUT CALIBRATION AND JUST SO THAT YOU GUYS ARE FAMILIAR WITH THOSE LENSES AND UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN BY CALIBRATION IS WE LOOK AT THREE CS.
WE LOOK AT THE COGNITIVE LEVEL OF THE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL.
WE LOOK AT THE CONTENT LEVEL OF THAT INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL, AND THEN WE LOOK AT THE CONTEXT IN WHICH IT'S PRESENTED.
SO IN TERMS OF COGNITIVE LEVEL, WE LOOK AT THE VERBS, LIKE OTHER VERBS IN THE WORK MATCHING WHAT THEY'RE ACTUALLY DOING IN THE CLASSROOM.
SO IF WE SAY WE'RE CREATING AN ANALYSIS, ARE WE ACTUALLY ANALYZING IN THE CONTENT.
WE'RE LOOKING AT THE STANDARDS.
WE'RE MAKING SURE THAT EVERY TIME WE WORK WITH KIDS, WE'RE WORKING ON MATERIAL THAT'S AT AT LEAST THE NINTH-GRADE ENGLISH LEVEL OR HIGHER.
WE'RE NOT DIPPING DOWN TOO LOW SO THAT KIDS AREN'T REALLY ACCESSING THAT HIGH LEVEL INSTRUCTION.
THEN IN TERMS OF THE CONTEXT LEVEL, WE'RE LOOKING AT THE TYPES OF QUESTIONS THAT THE TEACHERS ARE ASKING AND WE REALLY LOOK AT THOSE HIGHER-LEVEL QUESTIONS AS BEING REALLY CRITICAL.
SO NOT JUST DO YOU KNOW THIS INFORMATION, BUT CAN YOU APPLY IT? CAN YOU JUSTIFY YOUR THINKING? AND YOU'LL SEE IN SOME OF OUR WORK WHEN WE LOOK AT THE STANDARDS, THAT'S WHAT THE STATE IS ASKING US TO LOOK AT TOO, SO THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT. IT'S REALLY UNIQUE.
WE DID NOT DO THIS AND I DID NOT KNOW THIS FOR THE FIRST 17 YEARS OF MY CAREER.
AND IT'S REALLY CHANGED THE INSTRUCTIONAL DECISIONS THAT I MAKE AND I THINK IT REALLY HELPS OUR TEACHERS MAKE GREAT INSTRUCTIONAL DECISIONS. SO I'M REALLY PROUD OF THAT.
THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT WE ASKED TEACHERS TO WORK ON.
THAT'S OUR TEACHER ACCOUNTABILITY OF WHAT THEY'RE DOING, THEIR FIDELITY.
IN TERMS OF PERFORMANCE, WE LOOK AT THE ESSENTIAL STANDARDS THAT WE PREDICT AND THAT WE CHECK EACH SIX WEEKS THAT WE'RE WORKING ON.
AND WHAT WE'RE LOOKING AT IS GROWTH BECAUSE THAT'S THE NAME OF THE GAME FOR US.
WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING AT INTERVENTION ENRICHMENT, YOU'RE LOOKING AT NOT ONLY GROWING THE STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT QUITE THERE, BUT YOU'RE LOOKING AT GROWING THE STUDENTS THAT ARE THERE TO THE NEXT LEVEL.
[01:15:02]
SO WE WANT EVERY KID TO MAKE THAT GROWTH.WE'LL DO THAT THROUGH COMMON FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS AND INTERIM ASSESSMENTS.
AND YOU'LL HEAR PRINCIPLES IN THESE MEETINGS TALK ABOUT FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT.
THE EASY WAY THAT I EXPLAINED THAT TO OUR TEACHERS AND TO OUR PARENTS IS FORMATIVE IS I FEEL MY SHOULDER HURTS AND I'M GOING TO GO TO THE DOCTOR AND GET IT CHECKED OR MY HEART'S BEATING FAST AND I NEED TO GET THAT BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKED.
SO WE GIVE A LOT OF FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT TO CHECK THE PULSE OF WHERE KIDS ARE AT IN THE LEARNING PROGRESSION.
AND THEN THE SUMMATIVE IS LIKE THE AUTOPSY, WHEN IT'S OVER THE TEST IS DONE.
THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT AT THAT POINT.
AND SO IT'S REALLY CRITICAL THAT WE SPEND A LOT OF TIME ON THAT FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT, CHECKING THE PULSE SO THAT WE KNOW EXACTLY AND WE CAN PREDICT PRETTY INTENTIONALLY WHERE KIDS ARE GOING TO BE AT AND IT HELPS US TO MAKE INSTRUCTIONAL DECISIONS.
THE LAG PERFORMANCE MEASURE, THIS IS OUR SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT.
IT'S THE 2023 EOC PERFORMANCE AND OUR MEASURE THERE IS, WE'RE TRYING TO DO BETTER IN ENGLISH 1 AND IN ENGLISH 2 AS COMPARED TO WHAT WE DID LAST YEAR.
WE'RE TRYING TO IMPROVE OUR TEACHING PRACTICE SO THAT WE CAPTURE MORE KIDS AT HIGHER LEVELS OF PERFORMANCE IN THAT STATE STANDARD IS WHERE WE MEASURE THAT.
AND SO THAT'S WHAT DROVE OUR INSTRUCTION THIS YEAR AND THAT IS WHAT'S DRIVING OUR DECISIONS IN THIS.
WHEN WE TAKE A LOOK AT THOSE MEASURES, WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT ON THIS FIRST SLIDE IS THE FIDELITY MEASURE OF OUR INTERVENTION WALKS.
AND AS MR. MURDERER AND MYSELF AND SOME OF THE OTHER ADMINISTRATORS WALK THOSE CLASSROOMS, WE'RE MEASURING A FEW THINGS.
FIRST OF ALL, WE'RE MEASURING THE PERCENTAGE OF TIME WE SEE INTERVENTION AND THE PERCENTAGE OF TIME WE SEE ENRICHMENTS.
SO ON THE BACK END OF THAT, YOU'LL SEE EVERY TIME WE GO IN THOSE CLASSROOMS, WE SEE INTERVENTION.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT DR. SPENCER ASKED US TO CONSIDER EARLY ON WAS ARE WE LOOKING AS HIGHLY AT AN ENRICHMENT AS WE ARE AS AT INTERVENTION.
AND SO AS WE'VE BEEN LOOKING AT THAT, WE SEE ABOUT HALF THE TIME WE SEE ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES.
SO THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'RE WORKING ON IS ARE WE PROVIDING THAT AS MUCH AS WE'RE PROVIDING THE INTERVENTION? AND THEN WE BROKE DOWN A FEW OF THESE AREAS IN TERMS OF, IS THE INTERVENTION WORK THAT WE SEE, THE ENRICHMENT WORK.
DO WE SEE IT IN STATIONS? DO WE SEE IT IN SMALL GROUP WITH A TEACHER? AND DO WE SEE IT IN WHOLE CLASS? SO OUR THRESHOLD FOR WHOLE-CLASS, IT'S LIKE 50%.
SO IF OUR PERFORMANCE DIPS LOW, WE MAY NEED TO GIVE THE WHOLE GROUP AND INTERVENTION AS A GROUP VERSUS DOING INDIVIDUALIZED.
AND OF COURSE, THE GROWTH AREA FOR US AT THE HIGH SCHOOL IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE SMALL GROUP WITH A TEACHER BECAUSE WE'RE DOING SUCH PURPOSEFUL INTERVENTION AROUND THE ROOM, OUR TEACHERS TEND TO MONITOR AND SUPPORT EACH GROUP AS THEY GO.
AND SO THAT PULLING THEM TO THE INDIVIDUAL TABLE, THAT'S A GROWTH AREA THAT WE'RE WORKING ON.
BUT THAT'S THE SCOPE OF THE WORK IN THAT MEASUREMENT.
IN TERMS OF CALIBRATION, YOU HEARD ME TALK ABOUT IT EARLIER.
BUT WE'RE TRYING TO BE AT 90% OF THE TIME THAT WE'RE DOING THIS WORK.
WE SEE THAT IN OUR CONTENT, IN OUR CONTEXT AND OUR COGNITIVE LEVELS THAT WERE THERE.
WE'RE DOING A REALLY GREAT JOB IN ALL THREE OF THEM FOR THIS POINT OF THE YEAR BECAUSE WE STILL HAVE OUR WAYS TO GO.
BUT IN THIS CYCLE, WE SAW THAT COGNITIVE LEVEL, OF COURSE BE AT 91% AND OUR CONTEXTS AND CONTEXTS DIPS DOWN.
IT'S REALLY TRICKY BECAUSE IN ENRICHMENT, IT'S REALLY EASY TO BE ABOVE THOSE AREAS SOMETIMES AN INTERVENTION WILL GET A KID WHO MAY NOT BE READING ON A NINTH-GRADE LEVEL AND WE'LL HAVE TO DROP DOWN TO SEVENTH GRADE READING MATERIALS TO TRY TO PROVIDE THAT INTERVENTION.
AND WE JUST LIKE TO NOTATE THAT AND KEEP AN EYE ON THAT BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO CONTINUE TO HAVE KIDS STAY DOWN AT THAT LEVEL BECAUSE AT THE END THEY'RE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO WORK WITH THE CONTENT, BUT WE DO HAVE TO GO DOWN EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE BECAUSE WE'RE TRYING TO GET BROADER CONCEPTS INTO KIDS.
THIS IS AN EXTENSIVE GRAPH OF OUR ENGLISH 1 TEAM'S COMMON FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT DATA AND SO YOU'LL SEE THESE LETTERS AND NUMBERS AT THE BOTTOM 4F, 8A, 6C, 7C, 8F.
THESE ARE ESSENTIAL STANDARDS OR POWER STANDARDS THAT WE'RE WORKING ON.
AN EXAMPLE IS, 4F IS INFERENCING AND SO AS WE'RE TEACHING AND PLANNING PURPOSELY FOR INFERENCING, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT'S UNIQUE THAT THIS TEAM DOES THAT I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IS THEY TAKE AN ENTIRE DAY AND THEY PLAN THE ROAD TRIP FOR THE SIX-WEEKS.
THEY GET TOGETHER AND THEY DECIDE THESE ARE THE POWER STANDARDS THAT WE'RE GOING TO INSURE KIDS GET BY THE END OF THE CYCLE WHETHER THEY INTO TEACHING OR WE'RE GOING TO DO OUR VERY BEST TO DO IT.
THEN WE'RE GOING TO BUILD INTENTIONALLY ASSESSMENTS ALONG THE WAY THAT MEASURE IT AND HELP US TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS IN OUR INTERVENTION AND THEN AT THE END, OF COURSE, WE'LL LOOK AT THE FINAL DESTINATION.
WHAT YOU SEE ARE FROM THE MOST RECENT ROUND OF INTERVENTION AND ENRICHMENT THESE ARE THE SKILLS THAT WE WERE WORKING ON AND SO THESE POWER STANDARDS.
YOU'LL SEE SOME UPS AND DOWNS IN THIS DATA AND THAT'S PRETTY NORMAL IN ENGLISH YOU'LL GO FROM ONE GENRE TO THE OTHER WE MIGHT BE TALKING ABOUT NON-FICTION 1-6 WEEKS,
[01:20:01]
AND THEN WE MIGHT GET POETRY AND INFERENCING IN THOSE TWO SKILLS THEY'RE A LITTLE MORE CHALLENGING IN CERTAIN AREAS.BUT WHAT YOU CAN SEE ACROSS MOST OF THIS DATA, ESPECIALLY AT THE BACKEND, IS IN THOSE AREAS OF 6C, 7C, AND 8F, YOU'LL SEE WHERE THAT INTERVENTION AND ENRICHMENT HAD A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE PERFORMANCE.
ON 4F, YOU WILL SEE THAT DROP AT THE END OF OURS, WE WERE ON A GREAT PATH AND THEN WE HAD A LITTLE BIT OF A DROP.
WE CHANGED THE GENRE A LITTLE BIT IN THAT SETTING AND WE FOCUSED ON A COUPLE OF OTHER THINGS AND SO THOSE SKILLS DROPPED.
IT'S A YEAR LONG PROCESS TO CREATE SUSTAINABILITY IN THESE KIDS AND EXPOSURE TO ALL DIFFERENT TYPES OF LEARNING.
IT'LL MOVE IN EBB AND FLOW, BUT YOU CAN SEE THE POSITIVE TREND OF THE DATA IN THAT WORK.
WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF THEM FOR THAT COMMITMENT THEY MAKE TO NOT JUST TEACH IT ONCE AND TEST IT AND MOVE ON.
IS TEACH IT, TEST IT, INTERVENE AND THOSE ARE VERY QUICK SHORT ASSESSMENTS THAT GIVE US A PRETTY GOOD INDICATOR.
IN ENGLISH 2, YOU'LL SEE THE SAME THINGS WE'VE GOT SOME SUSTAINABILITY IN 4F, WHICH IS OUR INFERENCING SKILL AND THEN YOU'LL SEE SOME SIGNIFICANT GROWTH IN 8A, WHICH IS ANOTHER SKILL ANALYZING AUTHOR'S PURPOSE AND MESSAGE.
THEN YOU'LL SEE SOME UPS AND DOWNS IN 8E, 7C, 8F, SOME OF THOSE SKILLS.
AGAIN, YOU CAN'T INTERVENE AND INTERVENE AND ENRICH ON EVERYTHING, SO THEY HAVE TO PICK AND CHOOSE, BUT WHERE THEY'RE REALLY PURPOSEFUL, THEY SEE A MUCH MORE SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN SCORES AND OTHERS AND THEN ULTIMATELY IT'S UP TO THE KIDS ALSO TO CATCH THE TEXT AND BE SUCCESSFUL IN THAT TOO.
BUT AGAIN, WE SEE THOSE POSITIVE TRENDS THAT ARE SHOWING US THAT WE'RE REALLY WORKING ON CREATING EQUITY AMONGST THE POPULATION OF STUDENTS IN TERMS OF THEIR ACCESS AND THEIR ABILITY TO DO THAT WORK AND THAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR US.
A COUPLE OF CAMPUS HIGHLIGHTS AS I CONCLUDE, ONE OF THE THINGS I'M REALLY PROUD OF, THIS IS ON ENGLISH 1 AND 2 TEAM COLLABORATION IS THE STATE STANDARDS, SAY THE STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO AND THEN IT LISTS THE STANDARDS THAT KIDS ARE EXPECTED TO LEARN AND THAT'S GREAT.
I MEAN, THAT'S A REALLY CLEAR MEASURE FOR TEACHERS TO LOOK AT.
BUT ONE OF THE THINGS WE DID IS WE TALKED A LITTLE ABOUT MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, WHICH IS AN HBCU AND AT MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, THEY HAVE A MANTRA MISSION THAT THEY'RE GOING TO GROW STUDENTS TALL ENOUGH TO WEAR THE CROWN.
WHEN KIDS COME TO MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, THEY'RE NOT READY, THEY'RE GOING TO GIVE THEM SKILLS AND SUPPORT THEM ALONG THE WAY AND THEY'RE GOING TO GROW TALL ENOUGH TO WEAR IT.
WHEN WE TALKED WITH THE TEAMS ABOUT THAT, IT BECAME CLEAR TO US AND I THINK TO THEM THAT'S THE MESSAGE WE WANT.
ACROSS OUR BUILDING, NOT JUST IN ENGLISH 1 AND ENGLISH 2 YOU'LL SEE IT IN ALGEBRA, YOU'LL SEE IT IN BIOLOGY, YOU'LL EVEN SEE IT IN OUR COUNSELOR'S OFFICE.
OUR TEACHERS HAVE BUILT THESE CROWNS TO SAY THAT LANGUAGE AT THE TOP, THAT SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS WILL COLLECTIVELY DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO ENSURE THAT STUDENTS GROW TALL ENOUGH TO WEAR THIS CROWN.
NOT THAT THEY'RE JUST EXPECTED TO WEAR IT BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT THESE ARE RIGOROUS THINGS THAT THEY HAVE TO DO AND OUR TEACHERS ARE COMMITTED NOT ONLY TO TEACHING IT, BUT SUPPORTING THEM UP TO IT.
THE EVIDENCE OF THEM PLANNING AND OUR COUNSELORS WORKING ON COLLEGE BRIDGE AND CCMR, WHICH WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF HOW WE'VE DONE THAT OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS.
THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE WHEN TEACHERS ARE COMMITTED TO DOING THE WORK VERSUS THEY'RE JUST GOING TO A ROOM AND DOING WHAT ADMINISTRATION ASK THEM TO DO, WHICH SOMETIMES THAT CAN BE A PROCESS.
BUT IN SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL AND I THINK ACROSS THE DISTRICT AS WE CONTINUE TO WORK ON THE INVESTMENT IN THIS PROCESS OF BEING A PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY AND KNOWING THAT WE CAN'T DO IT ALONE, THAT IF WE DON'T DO IT TOGETHER, WE CAN'T MAKE IT HAPPEN.
I THINK THAT THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF THAT WORK WHERE THEY'RE COMMITTED TO ENSURING THAT KIDS WILL GROW TALL ENOUGH INSTEAD OF JUST SAYING, YOU'RE EXPECTED TO DO IT AND YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO GO HOME AND DO IT AND WE'RE GOING TO GIVE YOU EVERYTHING YOU CAN, BUT YOU GOT TO DO IT YOURSELF.
JUST REALLY PROUD OF THAT WORK AND I'M REALLY PROUD OF THESE TEACHERS AND THE TEACHERS THAT COULDN'T BE HERE AND CHRISTINA FOR BEING A PART OF THE PROCESS.
SUPPORT, I AM GREEDY, AND SO I DO ASK FOR SUPPORT AND CHRISTINA DOES A GREAT JOB OF HELPING US.
BUT I'M ALWAYS GOING TO ASK THE DISTRICT BECAUSE OUR SPECIALISTS AND OUR COACHES AND OUR LEADERS, THEY HAVE SOME OF THE CLEAREST LENSES ON WHAT THE STATE IS ASKING US TO DO AND HOW THEY WANT US TO PRESENT.
I'M ALWAYS GOING TO ASK THEM TO SIT RIGHT ALONG OUR TEACHERS AND HELP THEM MAKE THEIR VERY BEST DECISIONS ON WHAT THOSE CFA'S, THOSE COMMON FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS NEED TO LOOK LIKE.
WHICH STANDARDS WE NEED TO FOCUS ON AND WHICH ONES WE CAN LET SIT TO THE BACK A LITTLE BIT AND THEN WHAT THOSE INSTRUCTIONAL CALENDARS NEED TO LOOK LIKE FOR SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL.
BECAUSE WHAT WE DO AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL IS AMAZING WORK.
BUT WHEN WE SIT IN THAT ROOM, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HOW ARE WE GOING TO HELP SUMMIT KIDS ACCESS THIS INSTRUCTION AND BE BETTER AT IT.
WE'VE GOT TO DO THAT FROM A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT LENSES, AND CHRISTINA AGAIN JUST PLAYS A HUGE ROLE ON THAT, SHE'S COMMITTED TO BEING THERE AND BEING A PART OF IT AND WE'RE REALLY GRATEFUL FOR HER
[01:25:04]
AND EVERYBODY ELSE WHO'S A PART OF THAT. IT'S WHAT I GOT.>> THANKS MATT. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I THINK YOU HEARD OVER AND OVER IS PLCS AND ESSENTIAL STANDARDS AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I THINK IS MOST IMPORTANT ABOUT THE WORK THAT OUR PRINCIPALS ARE DOING IS THEY'RE TAKING THE LEARNING DOWN TO THE STANDARD.
INSTEAD OF SAYING, WELL ON UNIT 8 TEST, ONLY 70% OF THE KIDS PASS, SO I GUESS WE'LL MOVE ON BECAUSE 70S BETTER THAN 60.
BACK IN THE GOOD OLD DAY YOU DIDN'T DO WELL ON THAT TEST NOW THEY DON'T LOOK AT IT AS A UNIT THEY LOOK AT IT AT SPECIFIC AS CS.
THEY'RE LOOKING AT INFERENCING IS WHERE WE'RE STRUGGLING, THAT'S WHERE WE'RE STRUGGLING, WE'RE NOT GOING TO SPEND ALL THIS TIME ON AUTHORS CRAFT.
WE REALLY NARROWED DOWN THE FOCUS SO THAT WE CAN SEE WHERE KIDS ARE BEING SUCCESSFUL AND WHERE THEY'RE NOT AND THAT'S THAT WORK OF OUR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES.
WHERE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT EACH KID BY NAME AND CALLING OUT THE STANDARDS SO THAT THERE'S NO AMBIGUITY ABOUT WHAT KIDS NEED TO KNOW AND BE ABLE TO DO.
JUST TO RECAP, FIRST OF ALL, WE HAVE AMAZING PRINCIPALS AND I'M SO THANKFUL TO GET TO WORK WITH THEM BECAUSE THEY DO GREAT THINGS FOR KIDS AND THEIR LEADERSHIP ON OUR CAMPUSES IS REALLY SPECTACULAR AND YOU SAW EVIDENCE OF THAT TONIGHT WITH MIKO AND MATT.
BUT AGAIN, THE COA PROCESS IS FOCUSED ON THE ONE THING AND THOSE FOUR DISCIPLINES AND WE TRULY BELIEVE AS A CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT THAT IF WE STAY FOCUSED ON THIS PROCESS, WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO SEE GREAT THINGS FOR OUR KIDDOS.
AT THIS TIME WE'LL OPEN IT UP FOR QUESTIONS YOU HAVE FOR ME OR EITHER OF OUR PRINCIPALS.
>> WE'LL START ON THIS END, PROCEEDS MR. DAVIS.
>> THANK YOU ALL. THIS IS GOOD INFORMATION OBVIOUSLY, THERE'S SOMETHING WE REALLY FOCUSED ON.
I'M EXCITED TO SEE THE REALITY THAT IS, ONE SIZE DOESN'T FIT.
I'M ENCOURAGED TO KNOW THAT WE MAY HAVE 35,000 SCENARIOS WE'RE LOOKING AT DOWN TO THE STUDENT LEVEL.
FOR MS. RYANS OR DR. BROWN, I'D BE INTERESTED IF THERE WAS A PARTICULAR AHA MOMENT FOR YOU AS YOU APPLY THE TOOL AT YOUR RESPECTIVE SCHOOLS.
LEARNING PERHAPS THAT YOU GOT THAT YOU WEREN'T EXPECTING FROM THE TOOL AND HOW THAT MAY BE GOT APPLIED IN EARNEST AT YOUR RESPECTIVE CAMPUSES.
>> WELL, I THINK WITH THIS PROCESS, AND I CAME TO THIS DISTRICT AND I WAS A PRINCIPAL IN ANOTHER DISTRICT AND I THINK I WAS DOING A PRETTY GOOD JOB IN THAT DISTRICT WITH MY WORK.
BUT WHAT I'VE FOUND IN CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT IS THAT THE MODEL THAT I WAS IN WAS FOCUSED ON ABOUT 56 DIFFERENT THINGS THAT I HAD TO DO EVERY DAY AND WE DID A REALLY GOOD JOB AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR IDENTIFYING 56 ITEMS AND ALL OF THE THINGS WE WANTED TO DO.
THEN WE REALIZED AT THE END OF THE YEAR WE COVERED ABOUT FIVE OF THEM AND WE STRUGGLED TO MAKE GROWTH.
FOR ME, THE AHA IN COMING TO MANSFIELD AND IMPLEMENTING THIS PROCESS IS THAT MY ABILITY TO ALIGN THE ENTIRE CAMPUS INTO A STRUCTURE THAT WE CAN WORK TOGETHER IN TANDEM AS A TEAM IN TERMS OF A ONE THING.
LIKE I SAID, THE BEAUTY OF THE ONE THING IS THAT IT MAY BE AN ENGLISH 1, ENGLISH 2 THING THAT I'M TALKING ABOUT TO YOU TODAY.
BUT IT'S HAPPENING IN ALGEBRA, IT'S HAPPENING IN BIOLOGY AND SO THE CAMPUS BECOMES VERY CLEAR ON THE MISSION AND THE WORK THAT THEY NEED TO DO AND EVERYBODY SPEAKS THE SAME LANGUAGE.
WHAT YOU SEE IS THIS REALLY DRAMATIC SHIFT OF ACCOUNTABILITY FROM JUST THE LEADER DOWN ALL THE WAY TO THE TEACHERS AND EVEN TO THE STUDENTS WHEN THEY START TO REALLY UNDERSTAND LIKE THESE CROWNS ARE IN THE CLASSROOM, THEY START TO UNDERSTAND THESE ARE THE THINGS I'M GOING TO LEARN AND I'M GOING TO KNOW.
MY AHA MOMENT IS JUST WOW, YOU CAN REALLY TAKE SOMETHING VERY SPECIFIC AND DRIVE IT AND YOU SEE SIGNIFICANT GAINS IN CAMPUS PERFORMANCE AND IT GOES ACROSS THE WHOLE CAMPUS.
NOT JUST DOING 56 THINGS AND TOUCHING ON EACH DAY, BUT NEVER REALLY GETTING ANYTHING DONE, IF THAT MAKES SENSE.
>> I'LL ALSO ADD, I THINK THE AHA MOMENT FOR ME WAS THE BUY-IN FROM MY CAMPUS WHEN YOU INCLUDE THEM IN THE PROCESS WHEN YOU DO THAT ROOT CAUSE AND INVOLVE THEM IN THE PROCESS AND HELP THEM REALIZE THAT,
[01:30:01]
WE HAVE TO ELIMINATE THE THINGS THAT WE CAN'T CONTROL AND FOCUS ON WHAT WE CAN AND WE ARRIVE AT WHAT THAT THING IS THAT WE WANT TO FOCUS ON.JUST THE BUY-IN AND THE DESIRE TO SEE THE STUDENTS BE SUCCESSFUL WAS A HUGE AHA, THEY REALLY GET INTO THE PROCESS.
>> IT'S AWESOME. ANYBODY LISTENING? IS THERE?
>> I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU GUYS FOR THE PRESENTATION AND ALL THE DETAIL THAT YOU PUT INTO IT AND TO THANK YOUR TEAMS, BECAUSE I KNOW IT'S A LOT OF WORK AND IT'S SHOWING OF ALL THE TIME AND THE DEDICATION THAT YOU ARE PUTTING TOWARDS YOUR STUDENTS TO MAKE THIS DIFFERENCE.
I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO THE LEADERSHIP, BUT THANK YOU TO YOU THAT ARE IN THE TRENCHES AND MAKING THIS WORK. THANK YOU.
>> YES. I'LL JUST WANT TO HAVE SAID, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE PRESENTATION.
WE'LL JUST USE THE IMAGES AS EXAMPLES.
I KNOW YOU HAD MENTIONED A COUPLE OF YEARS PRIOR TO MAPPING YOUR FOCUS, READING HAD BEEN REALLY THE TOP OF THE FOCUS.
DO YOU STILL TAKE WHAT YOU WERE DOING WITH READING AND CONTINUE THAT WORK AND NOW SWITCHED OVER TO THE MATH? THEN HAVE YOU SEEN A CONTINUED IMPROVEMENT IN READING OR HAS THERE BEEN A DEBT BECAUSE THERE'S BEEN A FOCUS ON SOMETHING ELSE? HOW DOES THAT ALL PLAY OUT?
>> WE HAVE SEEN A CONTINUED IMPROVEMENT IN READING AND SO WHAT I REALLY MEANT TO SAY IF IT DIDN'T COME ACROSS, WELL, IS THAT WE REALLY DID PUT SOME GOOD PRACTICES IN PLACE THAT WE'VE BEEN USING YEAR-TO-YEAR.
IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE ALONG WITH SOME OF THE NEW THINGS THAT WE'VE IMPLEMENTED FROM THE DISTRICT.
THE STUDENTS ARE STILL THRIVING, WHICH IS WHY WE DECIDED TO DO MATH FOR A SECOND YEAR.
ALTHOUGH WE KEPT THE SAME ONE THING.
WE SHIFTED THE FOCUS FROM IMPLEMENTATION TO REALLY BEING INTENTIONAL ABOUT WHAT WAS HAPPENING AT THE TEACHER TABLE, BECAUSE READING WAS STILL HOLDING ITS OWN AND SO WE FELT LIKE WE WANT IT TO STILL CONTINUE WITH MATH.
>> OKAY, GREAT. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
>> AGAIN, I'LL REITERATE WHAT THE OTHER TRUSTEES SAID ABOUT YOUR PRESENTATIONS, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT YOU GUYS ALWAYS COME TO IMPRESS AND OUR STAFF AS WELL.
I KNOW THAT THAT WAS A GOOD QUESTION AS FOR HER BECAUSE OF NOT NECESSARILY GETTING TO SEE YOU GUYS FOR SO LONG.
BUT WHEN DID WE START IMPLEMENTING THE CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY IN ONE THING, HOW MANY YEARS DOES ANYBODY EVEN KNOW?
>> WE STARTED AT THE BEGINNING OF VISION 2020.
>> WHICH WAS BEFORE 2020, IN CASE YOU'RE NOT AWARE.
>> IT'S BEEN ABOUT EIGHT YEARS?
>> YES. IT'S ABOUT EIGHT YEARS, AND THOSE WERE SOME OF THE EXACT QUESTIONS WE HAD, BUT I WILL SAY EXACTLY OF DITTO, WHAT MS. BIDEN JUST SAID THAT JUST FOR THE PERSON THAT MAY NOT BE AS WELL GOTTEN TO SEE ALL THE PRESENTATIONS I'VE GOTTEN TO SEE, IS THAT ONE THING REALLY TOOK IT OUT, AS MR. BROWN POINTED OUT ALSO, THAT IT REALLY POINTS OUT THAT ONE THING, BUT IT DOESN'T MEAN YOU LET GO OF THE OTHERS.
THEN AS YOU ACCOMPLISH AND GET CLOSER TO YOUR GOAL ON THE ONE THING, JUST BECAUSE YOU MAY START FOCUSING ON ANOTHER SUBJECT, FOR INSTANCE, THAT WE STILL CONTINUE ON THOSE PRACTICES.
I THINK THAT'S IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE TO KNOW, AND THAT'S WHY YOU ARE SEEING THE RESULTS THESE GUYS ARE SEEING IN THEIR CAMPUSES.
THE OTHER THING WITH THE ONE THING THAT WAS REALLY NEAT TO SEE A PAN OUT IS THAT AS YOU ALSO MENTIONED FOR YOUR AHA MOMENT, MS. RYANS IS THAT IT WAS DONE ON AN AUTONOMY TYPE SITUATION WHERE THE CAMPUSES SOUGHT OUT WHAT WAS THERE ONE THING INSTEAD OF IT COMING FROM UP ABOVE, SO TO SAY, AND WHAT WE MIGHT PERCEIVE IT TO BE, AND THAT'S WHERE AS YOU SAID, NOT JUST YOUR STAFF, BUT ALSO YOUR STUDENTS LIKE EVERYONE'S BOUGHT INTO THIS WITHOUT THAT SOUNDING IN A BAD WAY, BUT IN A GOOD WAY, AND THEN EVERYBODY'S ON THE SAME TEAM ON THAT.
YOU CAN SEE THESE RESULTS AND I LOVE IT.
THAT JUST SHOWS YOU THAT Y'ALL REALLY ARE STAYING ON THESE THINGS THAT YOU'VE FOUND, EVEN IF YOU SWITCH GEARS A LITTLE BIT, YOU'RE STILL CONTINUING THE WORK BECAUSE WE'RE ALMOST NINE YEARS LATER NOW AND WE'RE STILL DOING IT.
THANK YOU GUYS, ESPECIALLY FOR WHAT ALL YOU ARE DOING BECAUSE I LOVE TO SEE THESE RESULTS.
OKAY. ANYTHING ELSE? [APPLAUSE].
WE WILL NOW MOVE ON TO ITEM 9, OUR PRESENTATIONS. DR. CANTU.
[9. Presentation]
>> YES, I SEE MR. WILLIAMS AND MS. CARMODY UP HERE AT THE PODIUM.
THEY'RE GOING TO GIVE US OUR COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING UPDATE.
>> DR. CANTU, PRESIDENT WILSON, BOARD MEMBERS AND EXECUTIVE COUNCIL, WE'RE EXTREMELY EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO COME AND GIVE YOU IN AN UPDATE FOR OUR COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING DEPARTMENT, AND WITH THAT, WE'RE GOING TO JUMP RIGHT IN.
[01:35:01]
WHO WE ARE. WHO WE ARE IS A DISTRICT, GOING TO JUST SHOW YOU THE MEMBERS OF THE TEAM.IT'S A SMALL TEAM, BUT THEY'RE A DEDICATED GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS.
WE HAVE ELIZABETH CARMODY, YOU'RE GOING TO HEAR FROM HER A LITTLE BIT LATER ON TONIGHT.
SHE IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR.
YOU HAVE ALICIA ALFORD, SHE'S THE DIRECTOR OF WEB SERVICES.
YOU HAVE LORI BERGER, SHE'S THE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS AND STRATEGIC INITIATIVES.
YOU HAVE CHRISTINA WILLIAMSON AND SHE'S THE DIRECTOR OF DIGITAL MEDIA AND MARKETING.
HE IS THE COORDINATOR OF DIGITAL MEDIA AND MARKETING, AND WE ALSO HAVE HEATHER CARSON AND SHE'S THE COORDINATOR OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS.
I WANT TO TAKE A LITTLE BIT OF TIME AND TALK WITH YOU ABOUT OUR ONE THING.
YOU'VE HEARD A LOT ABOUT THAT TONIGHT, AND I HAVE TO TELL YOU THE ONE THING FOR THE COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING DEPARTMENT IS TO TELL THE STORY OF MANSFIELD ISD IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT BUILDS PRIDE, TRUST, AND CONFIDENCE WITH OUR STUDENTS, STAFF, PARENTS, AND THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE.
IF YOU KNOW, WE HAVE VISION 2030, AND AS A PART OF VISION 2030, IT TALKS ABOUT OUR VISION AND WE ARE A DESTINATION DISTRICT.
WE TALK ABOUT OUR MODEL, MANSFIELD ISD IS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE, LEARN AND TEACH IN EVERY ASPECT OF WHAT WE DO, AND YOU LOOK AT OUR ONE THING, IT POINTS TO VISION 2030.
TONIGHT WE'RE GOING TO TAKE YOU ON A JOURNEY WITH US.
WE'RE GOING TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL THE DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF WHAT WE DO FROM OUR COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING DEPARTMENT.
WE WANT TO GO OVER AN OVERVIEW WITH YOU REALLY QUICKLY.
WE WANT TO TALK WITH YOU ABOUT COMMUNICATIONS.
WE'RE GOING TO BREAK THAT DOWN AND SHARE WITH YOU, THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF COMMUNICATION IN WHICH WE'RE GOING TO COVER TONIGHT AND MS. CARMODY IS GOING TO SHARE THAT WITH YOU.
WE'RE GOING TO TALK WITH YOU ABOUT WEB SERVICES, AND I HOPE I'M NOT STEALING TOO MUCH OF ELIZABETH'S THUNDER AS IT RELATES TO THE FACT THAT WE HAVE A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED WEBSITE, IF YOU DIDN'T KNOW THAT.
WE'RE GOING TO TALK WITH YOU ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA.
WE'RE GOING TO SHARE WITH YOU THE FACT THAT IF YOU'RE NOT SHARING YOUR STORY THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA, YOU'RE REALLY NOT SHARING YOUR STORY.
YOU'RE NOT REALLY TELLING YOUR STORY, AND IN THE OTHER PIECE OF THAT, SOCIAL MEDIA IS GOOD BUT IT'S ALSO CAN HAVE ITS CHALLENGES AS WELL AND IT NEEDS TO BE MONITORED 24/7.
THOSE ARE A LOT OF THINGS WE'RE GOING TO TALK WITH YOU ABOUT THAT AS WELL.
MEDIA RELATIONS, WE'RE GOING TO TALK WITH YOU ABOUT THAT.
WE'RE GOING TO VISIT WITH YOU ABOUT MARKETING AND HOW WE REALLY TAUGHT AND PROMOTE OUR BRAND.
WE'RE GOING TO TALK WITH YOU ABOUT ADVERTISING AND THE GREAT THINGS THAT ARE TAKING PLACE THERE IN WHICH WE ALLOW OUR COMMUNITY TO BE ABLE TO LEAN IN WITH US AND BE ABLE TO TALK AND PROMOTE THEIR BRAND AS WELL.
WE'RE GOING TO SHARE WITH YOU ABOUT STUDENTS, STAFF, AND COMMUNITY RECOGNITIONS.
JUST FOR THE RECORD, I WANT FOLKS TO KNOW, EVEN THOUGH THAT THE RECOGNITIONS WENT A LITTLE BIT LONG, AND THANK YOU PRESIDENT WILSON FOR TALKING ABOUT THE FACT THAT WE KNEW THAT WE WERE GOING TO BE BRINGING THEM BACK.
BUT THAT WAS FUN STUFF. THAT'S WHAT WE'RE ABOUT HERE IN MANSFIELD ISD AS IT RELATES TO REALLY TELLING THAT STORY, WE'RE GOING TO TALK WITH YOU ABOUT OUR BOND PROGRAM AND HOW WE ARE A PART OF COMMUNICATING THAT, IN BUILDING THE CONFIDENCE AND TRUST FROM OUR COMMUNITY.
LASTLY, WE'RE GOING TO TALK WITH YOU ABOUT COMMUNITY RELATIONS, SO I MAY HAVE TAKEN A LITTLE BIT OF ELIZABETH'S THUNDER WITH THAT.
BUT AT THIS TIME I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO HER AND SHE'S GOING TO NAVIGATE THROUGH, WE GOT SOME OF THE SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF HOW WE DO THAT, AND I'LL COME BACK A LITTLE BIT LATER, MS. CARMODY.
>> THANK YOU, MR. WILLIAMS. HE DID PRETTY MUCH SAY EVERYTHING THAT I HAD PLANNED TO SAY.
I'LL TRY AND BE BRIEF BECAUSE HE DID STEAL THE THUNDER.
GOOD EVENING AGAIN, BOARD PRESIDENT WILSON, DR. CANTU, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND EXECUTIVE COUNCIL.
I'M GOING TO START OFF BY TALKING ABOUT THOSE TWO DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF COMMUNICATIONS THAT WE TALKED ABOUT.
WE'RE REALLY FOCUSING ON TWO PRIMARY FOCUSES, GENERAL COMMUNICATIONS AND CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS.
OUR GENERAL COMMUNICATIONS ARE ALL OF THOSE GOOD THINGS.
INFORMATION AND STORIES, NEWS, EVENTS, GREAT THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING, ACCOMPLISHMENTS, THINGS THAT ARE CHANGING IN OUR DISTRICT, GENERAL INFORMATION FOR OUR COMMUNITY, AND YOU'LL FIND THAT IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT PLACES ON OUR WEBSITE, ON SOCIAL MEDIA, WE PUT OUT WEEKLY NEWS STORIES ON DIFFERENT TOPICS, A VARIETY OF VENUES INCLUDING OUR HOLD MUSIC.
IF YOU EVER CALL THE DISTRICT, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO HEAR THAT GREAT COMMERCIAL JAM, THAT'S HOLD MUSIC.
YOU'RE ACTUALLY GOING TO HEAR INFORMATION ABOUT MANSFIELD ISD.
WE'RE INTENTIONAL IN THOSE STRATEGIES ABOUT SHARING WHO WE ARE, AND OF COURSE, WE SHARE A LOT OF OUR STORY THROUGH VIDEO.
I'M GOING TO SHARE A VIDEO STORY WITH YOU RIGHT NOW.
>> [MUSIC] WHEN I GROW UP, I WANT TO BE A VIDEO GAME PROGRAMMER.
>> I WANT TO BE A TEACHER WHEN I GROW UP.
>> LIFE IS FILLED WITH ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES.
SOME STUDENTS WILL CHOOSE A PATH THAT LEADS TO A FOUR-YEAR UNIVERSITY.
OTHERS WILL JOIN THE MILITARY.
SOME WILL CHOOSE A TRADE, AND SOME WILL START THEIR OWN BUSINESS.
MANSFIELD ISD'S VISION 2030 PROVIDES A LASER FOCUS ON ENSURING OUR STUDENTS ARE EQUIPPED TO FOLLOW WHICHEVER PATH THEY CHOOSE.
>> WE LIVE AND BREATHE VISION 2030 EVERY DAY, YOU HEAR THAT FROM OUR CAMPUS LEADERS, YOU HEAR THAT IN EVERY PRESENTATION.
BUT HOW DO WE EXPLAIN THAT TO OUR COMMUNITY? VIDEO STORIES LIKE THIS HELP MAKE IT MORE TANGIBLE.
[01:40:01]
STUDENTS ARE SEEING FAMILIAR FACES, THEY'RE SEEING THEIR OWN FACES.WE'RE HELPING EXPLAIN VISION 2030 AND SHARE INFORMATION ABOUT IT, SO OUR COMMUNITY KNOWS WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE IN ACTION.
WE BELIEVE IN DATA IN THE COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT, AND YOU MAY WONDER, WELL WHAT DOES DATA LOOK LIKE FOR THEM? DID YOU KNOW THAT THIS YEAR ALONE WE'VE SENT MORE THAN 3,600 MESSAGES THROUGH OUR COMMUNICATION SYSTEM.
WE'VE HAD MORE THAN 196 NEWS RELEASE STORIES ON OUR WEBSITE AND WE'VE PUBLISHED MORE THAN 155 VIDEOS.
WE'VE TAKEN ON A NEW STRATEGY WITH VIDEO STORYTELLING THIS YEAR.
HISTORICALLY, WE'VE DONE A LOT OF STORIES THAT ARE ABOUT EVENTS.
WE GO TO THE SPELLING BEE, WE COVER IT AT THE END OF THE WEEK, WE PUT OUT A GREAT VIDEO ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE AND THE WINNER IN ALL, AND IT'S WONDERFUL.
BUT WHAT WE'VE HEARD FROM THE COMMUNITY IS, THEY WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON.
WE KNOW OUR COMMUNITY HAS PHONES IN THEIR HANDS.
IF WE SEND THEM A QUICK VIDEO LINK AND THAT VIDEO LINK HAS MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THINGS THAT MIGHT BE HAPPENING IN THE MOMENT.
IT'S A FASTER WAY TO GET INFORMATION TO OUR COMMUNITY THAT'S MORE TANGIBLE BASED ON HOW THEY WANT US TO COMMUNICATE WITH THEM.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT AN EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THOSE NEW VIDEOS THAT WE'VE LAUNCHED THIS YEAR.
>> WELCOME TO CATCH UP WITH CANTU.
I'M DR. CANTU AND THIS IS OUR BRAND NEW VIDEO SERIES WHERE WE CATCH UP ON WHAT HAPPENED ACROSS MISD LAST WEEK, AND LOOK FORWARD TO UPCOMING EVENTS.
>> DR. CANTU SUMMARIZED IT PERFECTLY THERE.
THIS VIDEO SERIES ALLOWS US TO SHARE WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE MOMENT.
THINGS THAT HAVE JUST OCCURRED, GREAT CELEBRATIONS AS WELL AS THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO.
IT'S A NEW WAY FOR US TO REACH OUR COMMUNITY RATHER THAN SENDING AN EMAIL BLAST OR A NEWSLETTER BLAST, THEY CAN WATCH IT ON THEIR PHONE IMMEDIATELY.
WE ALSO KNOW THAT WITH THE CATCH UP WITH CANTU SERIES THAT WE ARE GETTING HIGHER VIEWERSHIP.
THIS VIDEO SERIES ALLOWS PEOPLE TO SEE AND BUILD A CONNECTION TO DR. CANTU.
THEY'VE COME TO EXPECT THAT MESSAGING FROM HER AND THAT MONTHLY UPDATE OF THINGS GOING ON.
WE'RE VERY EXCITED THAT TOMORROW WE'LL BE LAUNCHING ANOTHER SIMILAR VIDEO SERIES WITH OUR BOARD BRIEF, WHERE OUR COMMUNITY WILL GET TO HEAR AN UPDATE ON WHAT HAPPENED IN MONTHLY BOARD MEETINGS AND THINGS THAT ARE COMING FROM THE BOARD PERSPECTIVE.
STAY TUNED TOMORROW FOR THAT TO BE RELEASED.
NEXT, I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS.
OUR CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS HELPS MITIGATE THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF THINGS THAT MAY BE HAPPENING IN OUR COMMUNITY AND IT DOES ENCOURAGE FAIR AND OBJECTIVE MEDIA COVERAGE.
CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS IN SCHOOLS AND DISTRICTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY HAS CHANGED DRASTICALLY IN THE LAST DECADE.
IT HAS CHANGED EVEN MORE SO IN A POST-COVID ERA.
FOR ANY COMMUNITY THAT EXPERIENCED AN ACTIVE CRISIS SITUATION AS WE DID IN OCTOBER OF 2021 AS OUR NEIGHBORING DISTRICTS EXPERIENCED LAST WEEK, AND AS A SCHOOL IN NASHVILLE EXPERIENCED JUST YESTERDAY.
CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS ARE ESSENTIAL NOW, THEY ARE NEEDED IN THE WORK THAT COMMUNICATIONS TEAMS DO BECAUSE AT SOME POINT WE'RE ALL GOING TO FACE ONE.
FOR US, OUR CRISIS COMMUNICATION LOOKS LIKE TRAINING OUR CAMPUS ADMINISTRATORS, WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR SAFETY AND SECURITY TEAM AND OUR POLICE DEPARTMENT.
THAT TRAINING INCLUDES CREATING PRE-WRITTEN LETTERS AND TEXT MESSAGES ABOUT VARIOUS DIFFERENT INCIDENTS THAT MAY OCCUR THROUGHOUT OUR DISTRICT, AND PUTTING THOSE TEMPLATES INTO OUR COMMUNICATION SYSTEM TO HELP ENSURE FASTER COMMUNICATION, BUT ALSO CONSISTENT COMMUNICATION.
IF AN INCIDENT OCCURS ON ONE SIDE OF THE DISTRICT AND IT HAPPENS THREE DAYS LATER ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DISTRICT, WE WANT THAT MESSAGING TO BE CONSISTENT FOR OUR CAMPUS LEADERS.
WE ALSO TRAIN AND FAMILIARIZE OUR STAFF ON PROPER PROCEDURES, THEIR CONTACT BY THE MEDIA, AND THEN WE PREPARE REGULAR MEDIA STATEMENTS AND TALKING POINTS FOR FRONT OFFICE STAFF IN A CRISIS SITUATION.
WE ARE ALSO CONSTANTLY MONITORING OUR MEDIA COVERAGE AND OUR SOCIAL MEDIA CHATTER BOTH IN A CRISIS SITUATION BUT REALLY AS MR. WILLIAMS STATED, SOCIAL MEDIA OVERALL WE'RE CONSTANTLY PAYING ATTENTION.
OLD SCHOOL CRISIS COMMUNICATION WAS THAT WE'VE UPDATED THE INCLEMENT WEATHER PAGE AND WE SEND YOU THAT REMINDER THAT COMES EVERY JANUARY OR FEBRUARY OF WHERE TO FIND INFORMATION IF A SCHOOL CLOSURE OCCURS RELATED TO WEATHER.
AS YOU KNOW, FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS, WE'VE GOTTEN PRETTY GOOD AT UPDATING THAT INCLEMENT WEATHER PAGE, SENDING AN EMAIL AND TEXT, PUTTING UP A POP-UP, PUTTING A NEWS RELEASE ON OUR WEBSITE, AND NOTIFYING OUR MEDIA PARTNERS.
IN ANY CRISIS SITUATION WE ALSO ARE AVAILABLE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT AND TAKE OVER THE OVERALL COMMUNICATIONS FOR OUR CAMPUSES OR DEPARTMENTS.
DID YOU KNOW THAT WE HAVE OVER 60,000 SUBSCRIBERS IN OUR EMAIL DATABASE? WE HAVE OVER 40,000 TEXT MESSAGE RECIPIENTS.
WE HAVE OVER 160 USERS WHO ARE ABLE TO ACCESS OUR SYSTEM AND SEND OUT EMAILS AND TEXTS.
WE HAVE MORE THAN 60 TEMPLATE LETTERS AND TEXTS THAT HAVE BEEN
[01:45:01]
PREPOPULATED FOR OUR CAMPUS LEADERS SO THAT THEY CAN INSTANTLY ACCESS THOSE TEMPLATES.NOW, I MENTIONED THAT CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS HAS CHANGED SIGNIFICANTLY FOR DISTRICTS ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY, AND IT IS RAPIDLY CHANGING. IN OUR DISTRICT LAST FALL, JUST IN THE FALL, OUR TEAM RECEIVED 25 REQUESTS FOR CRISIS SUPPORT COMMUNICATIONS.
THAT MEANS WE'RE SUPPORTING IN WRITING A LETTER THAT THAT TEMPLATE DIDN'T COVER.
THIS SPRING SINCE THE START OF THE SECOND SEMESTER, WE'VE RECEIVED MORE THAN 64 REQUESTS FOR CRISIS COMMUNICATION SUPPORT, 64 VARIOUS LETTERS WHERE WE DON'T HAVE A TEMPLATE FOR THAT, SOMETHING IS GOING ON AND WE NEED TO PROVIDE SUPPORT.
I'M GOING TO LOOK AT MR. BROGDEN.
JANUARY, I BELIEVE WE HAD A WATER LINE BREAK AT D.P.
MORRIS. I KNOW YOU ALL REMEMBER.
I THINK WE GOT THAT NEWS ON A SUNDAY AND VARIOUS DIFFERENT TEAMS LAUNCHED THEIR RESPONSE TO BE ABLE TO PREPARE OUR STUDENTS AND OUR STAFF TO RELOCATE.
OUR TEAM SUPPORTED CONSISTENT AND CLEAR COMMUNICATION ACROSS AN EIGHT-WEEK TIME SPAN WHILE CONSTRUCTION WAS GOING ON PROVIDING COMMUNICATIONS FOR D.P.
MORRIS FOR GIDEON AND BROCKETT, WHO WERE RECEIVING THOSE STUDENTS AND STAFF FOR THE DISTRICT WIDE RESPONSE AS WELL AS FOR MEDIA.
WE CREATED 12 VARIOUS COMMUNICATIONS RELATED TO THE DP MORRIS WATER LINE BREAK.
SIMILARLY, WE KNOW YOU'RE FAMILIAR WITH LAST WEEK SOCIAL MEDIA THREATS AND HOAXES THAT OCCURRED.
IN A THREE-DAY SPAN, WE DRAFTED 12 COMMUNICATIONS RELATED TO VARIOUS THREATS AND SOCIAL MEDIA ISSUES HAPPENING ACROSS THE DISTRICT.
WE RESPONDED TO MORE THAN FIVE MEDIA INQUIRIES ON THAT TOPIC AND WE CONTINUE TO RECEIVE INQUIRIES TODAY.
THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE FOR US OF HOW CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS HAS BECOME MUCH MORE OF A FOCUS ON OUR TEAM TO HELP SUPPORT OUR CAMPUS LEADERS AND THE DISTRICT AS A WHOLE.
WE KNOW THAT MOST OF OUR COMMUNITY ACTUALLY ACCESSES INFORMATION THROUGH OUR WEBSITE AND THROUGH WEB SERVICES.
WE ARE DEVELOPING AND MAINTAINING ALL DIFFERENT ONLINE FUNCTIONS OF BOTH INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS ON THE DISTRICT WEBSITE.
WE CREATE THE LAYOUT AND THE DESIGN.
YOU HEARD EARLIER THAT IT'S A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED WEBSITE AND WE DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN ALL THE DISTRICT AND CAMPUS PAGES.
YOU MAY NOT KNOW JUST TO SHARE THE VOLUME OF OUR WORK.
THERE ARE 51 INDIVIDUAL WEBSITES THAT WE MANAGE IN THE DISTRICT.
THERE ARE 48 CAMPUS WEB MANAGERS THAT WE PROVIDE TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND TRAINING TO ON AN ONGOING BASIS AND SUPPORT THEM ENSURING THAT THEY ARE PROVIDING UPDATED AND NEW CONTENT TO THEIR CAMPUS PAGES TO KEEP THEIR LOCAL CAMPUS COMMUNITY INFORMED.
LET ME LOOK BACK 2020, WE REDESIGNED OUR CAMPUS PAGE.
WE'RE CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT TEAM, WE WANTED TO REVAMP THAT LOOK, MAKE IT DIFFERENT, MAKE IT SPECIAL, AND DID CUSTOM DESIGNS.
THE PROCESS TOOK ABOUT A YEAR.
BUT SOME OF THAT WAS ALSO BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT 67 PERCENT OF OUR USERS ARE ACCESSING OUR WEBSITE FROM THEIR MOBILE DEVICE.
A RESPONSIVE DESIGN SITE WHICH WE NOW HAVE, CREATES A STREAMLINE EXPERIENCE NO MATTER WHAT DEVICE YOU ARE ACCESSING THE INFORMATION.
ONLY 31 PERCENT OF OUR FAMILIES IN OUR COMMUNITY ARE ACCESSING FROM A LAPTOP OR A COMPUTER, AND JUST OVER ONE PERCENT ARE ON TABLETS.
MOST OF OUR USERS ARE ON OUR WEBSITES USING THEIR CELL PHONE.
THANKS TO OUR NEW WEB DESIGN, NO MATTER WHAT PAGE YOU'RE ON IT'S RESPONSIVE AND FITS THE FRAME OF YOUR PHONE AND YOU CAN SEE ALL THAT INFORMATION CLEARLY.
SOME FREQUENTLY VISITED SITES.
WE KNOW THAT SKYWARD AND CLASSLINK ARE THE MOST COMMON.
STAFF NEED TO ACCESS, STUDENTS NEED TO ACCESS, PARENTS NEED TO ACCESS.
BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT OUR REPLY WITH MISD AND HR WEBSITE IS ALSO ONE OF THE MORE FREQUENTLY ACCESS SITES THROUGHOUT OUR VARIOUS PAGES, AS WELL AS OUR POWER OF CHOICE PROGRAMS. MOVING ONTO SOCIAL MEDIA.
MR. WILLIAMS SHARED, IT'S GREAT AND IT'S ALSO A CHALLENGE.
IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO PUBLICIZE AND SHARE GREAT INFORMATION OF THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT.
WE TALKED ABOUT 67 PERCENT OF THOSE USERS ARE ON THEIR PHONE.
WE KNOW THAT THEY'RE ACCESSING SOCIAL MEDIA ON A REGULAR BASIS.
IT DOES ALSO REQUIRE THAT OUR TEAM MONITORS REGULARLY BECAUSE EVERYONE IS ON THEIR PHONE ON REGULAR BASIS.
WE POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA PAGES MULTIPLE TIMES PER DAY ACROSS MULTIPLE PLATFORMS EVERY DAY AND ENGAGE VARIOUS DIFFERENT AUDIENCES.
WE ARE CONSTANTLY TRACKING ANALYTIC DATA IN OUR PROGRESS INCLUDING OUR FOLLOWERS, OUR ENGAGEMENT, OUR VIEWS, AND OUR REACH.
WE ARE CONTINUOUSLY RESEARCHING SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS FOR VARIOUS NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPLEMENTATION.
AS I HOPE YOU KNOW, WE LAUNCHED INSTAGRAM THIS FALL, WHICH HAS BEEN REALLY SUCCESSFUL FOR US PARTICULARLY IN STANDING WITH OUR STUDENTS AND OUR STUDENT ENGAGEMENT.
WE KNOW DEMOGRAPHICALLY THAT THEY'RE USING INSTAGRAM MORE THAN THEY'RE USING FACEBOOK, AND WE WANTED TO CREATE A BROADER REACH FOR THEM.
YOU MAY NOT KNOW THAT DURING THE ICE CLOSURES THIS YEAR, DR. CANTU WAS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS PEOPLE WITH ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.
THAT WAS THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF ENGAGEMENT OF THEM TALKING ABOUT HOW GRATEFUL THEY WERE I THINK THEY NOMINATED HER FOR PRESIDENT AND BEING THANKFUL THAT SCHOOL WAS CLOSED.
[01:50:03]
WE KNOW THAT KIDS ARE PAYING ATTENTION TO OUR INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT.WE ALSO CREATE OUR SOCIAL MEDIA GUIDELINES AND WE KEEP AN EYE ON THOSE AND WE TRAIN OUR STAFF ON SOCIAL MEDIA POLICIES AND BEST PRACTICES.
AGAIN, DID YOU KNOW OUR REACH IS IN THE THOUSANDS EVERY DAY THROUGH MULTIPLE DIFFERENT PLATFORMS EVERY TIME WE POST.
I MENTIONED WE POST MULTIPLE TIMES PER DAY, MULTIPLE DIFFERENT PLATFORMS. SINCE JANUARY, WE'VE ALSO RELAUNCHED OUR LINKEDIN PROFILE AS MANSFIELD ISD.
AGAIN, ANOTHER STRATEGY FOR US THAT'S REALLY SUPPORTING THE RECRUITMENT EFFORTS WITH HR AND ENCOURAGING NEW POTENTIAL TEACHERS AND STAFF TO COME JOIN OUR DISTRICT.
OUR MEDIA PARTNERS WE TALKED ABOUT IN CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS, BUT OUR MEDIA RELATIONS IS ALSO CRITICAL AND TELLING THOSE GREAT STORIES ABOUT WHO WE ARE.
WE CAN PUT OUT ALL THE NEWS STORIES AND EMAILS AND TEXTS.
BUT WHEN THE MEDIA PICKS IT UP, IT REACHES A MUCH BROADER AUDIENCE THAN OUR IMMEDIATE MANSFIELD ISD COMMUNITY.
IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO HAVE POSITIVE NEWS STORIES IN THE MEDIA, SHOWCASING OUR STUDENTS, OUR STAFF, OUR DISTRICT, OUR FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE ENDLESS FINANCE AWARDS THAT WERE RECOGNIZED TONIGHT.
WE MAINTAIN AN ACTIVE MEDIA CONTACT LIST.
WE SEND NEWS RELEASES AND REQUESTS FOR COVERAGE FOR VARIOUS DIFFERENT EVENTS THAT HAPPEN THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT.
WE ACTUALLY PRODUCE ORIGINAL NEWS CONTENT AND SHARE THAT WITH OUR MEDIA PARTNERS TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO COME COVER GREAT THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING IN MANSFIELD ISD.
MEDIA RELATIONS IS PART OF OUR CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY PROCESS AND OUR SCORECARD.
ONE OF THE THINGS WE ACTUALLY TRACK IS OUR POSITIVE MEDIA HITS EACH YEAR.
AS YOU CAN SEE FROM OUR CURRENT SCORECARD, OUR GOAL WAS 1,100 HITS FOR THIS YEAR, AND WE'RE ALREADY AT OVER 14,000 POSITIVE MEDIA HITS.
UNEXCITING FACT ABOUT THIS IS THAT WE ALSO PAY ATTENTION TO THE MARKET VALUE OF OUR POSITIVE NEWS COVERAGE.
THE MARKET VALUE THIS YEAR ALONE WAS OVER $1.7 MILLION YEAR-TO-DATE IN THAT POSITIVE MEDIA COVERAGE.
THAT'S $1.7 MILLION THAT WE'RE SAVING TAXPAYERS THAT WE'RE NOT SPENDING ON MARKETING AND ADVERTISING ON BEHALF OF OUR DISTRICT.
IT'S HAPPENING BECAUSE OF OUR MEDIA RELATIONS AND IT'S A GREAT VALUE TO SHOWCASE WHO WE ARE. NOW AM GOING TO SHARE.
>> GREEN BAND PRACTICE AND GYM CLASS AND [OVERLAPPING] STUDENTS IS HARD AT WORK.
THEY'RE MANUFACTURING PARTS THAT ARE GOING TO BE USED IN SPACE.
OLIVIA LEECH INTRODUCES US TO THE NORTH TEXAS STUDENTS WHO ARE LAUNCHING THEIR CAREERS IN ENGINEERING WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM NASA.
>> IT'S MONDAY MORNING AT BEN BARBER INNOVATION ACADEMY IN MANSFIELD.
THESE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE HARD AT WORK USING HIGHLY TECHNICAL MACHINES TO FABRICATE PARTS IN THIS MANUFACTURING CLASS.
[NOISE] BUT THIS ISN'T YOUR ORDINARY SCHOOL PROJECT.
THEY'RE WORKING ON PARTS THAT WILL BE USED BY NASA.
>> WE'RE BUILDING A COMPONENT TO A STORAGE LOCKER BOX AND THE STORAGE LOCKER BOX IS A PART THAT THEY USE TO SEND SUPPLIES OR EXPERIMENTS UP TO THE ASTRONAUTS ON THE SPACE STATION.
>> THIS WAS A GREAT EXAMPLE FOR US OF MEDIA PARTNERS COMING OUT AND COVERING GREAT THINGS HAPPENING WITH OUR STUDENTS, GREAT OPPORTUNITIES AND CHOICE AND OUR STUDENTS ARE MAKING AN IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY BEYOND OUR OWN.
MARKETING CREATES PRIDE IN OUR SCHOOL, AND OUR DISTRICT, AND HELPS TO BUILD AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHY PUBLIC EDUCATION IS SUCH A BENEFIT OF THE COMMUNITY.
SOME OF THE TRADITIONAL MARKETING ITEMS YOU'LL SEE, I BELIEVE YOU ALL HAVE A FOLDER ON YOUR DESK WITH INFORMATION IN IT.
SOME OF OUR PRINTED MARKETING MATERIALS OR STATE-OF-THE-DISTRICT POSTCARD OR MAGAZINES.
YOU MIGHT SEE OUR BOX TRUCKS DRIVING AROUND THE COMMUNITY WITH VISION 2030 ON THEM AND INFORMATION ABOUT VARIOUS PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES WITHIN THE DISTRICT.
KNEW THIS YEAR WE ALSO LAUNCHED OUR ONLINE STORE.
NOW WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR COMMUNITY TO GO OUT AND GET AN MSD T-SHIRT AND WHERE THAT AND JOIN US AND SHARE THEIR PRIDE IN OUR BRAND AND WHO WE ARE.
ONE OF THE OTHER WAYS THAT YOU'LL FIND US EMPHASIZING VARIOUS MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES IN THE DISTRICT IS OUR AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS.
ONE OF OUR RECENT AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS IS THE PRE-K AND K ROUNDUP AND THAT'S TO HELP US GET THE WORD OUT ABOUT TOMORROW'S EVENT AS WELL AS ENROLLMENT THAT'S COMING UP BEGINNING IN EARLY APRIL, AND LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT ONE OF THOSE GREAT VIDEOS.
>> AS FOR MOM, I WANT WHAT IS BEST FOR MY CHILD.
THAT'S WHY SHE'S HAD MANSFIELD ISD.
I KNOW THEY ARE HAVING FUN AND LEARNING AT THE SAME TIME.
THEY ARE IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT AND I LOVE THAT HER TEACHER COMMUNICATES WITH ME REGULARLY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, MY CHILD HAS A TEACHER THAT TRULY CARES ABOUT HER.
>> THAT VIDEO LAUNCHED LAST WEEK.
YOU CAN FIND IT ON OUR WEBSITE AND AGAIN, IT'S PART OF THAT PRE-K KINDER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN.
[01:55:02]
SOME OTHER WAYS YOU'LL SEE OUR MARKETING THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT.ALL OF OUR MEDIA BOARDS AND DIFFERENT CAMPUSES AND DEPARTMENTS WHERE YOU CAN SEE THIS IS OUR HOUSE IS DISPLAYED.
WE'RE CONSTANTLY PUSHING NEW UPDATES IN GRAPHICS, SO CAMPUSES AND DEPARTMENTS CAN SEE WHAT'S GOING ON.
WE ALREADY TOOK A LOOK AT CATCH-UP WITH CANTU.
NEW THIS YEAR WE ALSO HAD A NEW STRATEGY AND THE TAKE ANOTHER LOOK CAMPAIGN.
WE LOOKED AT STUDENTS AND FAMILIES WHO HAD LEFT OUR DISTRICT WITHIN THE LAST YEAR AND A HALF OR SO AND WE SENT THEM INFORMATION ABOUT WHO WE ARE TODAY.
WE INVITED THEM TO TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AND TO RECONSIDER MANSFIELD ISD AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM TO COME BACK AND ENJOY ALL THE GREAT OPPORTUNITIES IN OUR DISTRICT.
THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF SOME OF THE DIGITAL AND FLIER COLLATERAL THAT WE ALSO CREATED AND OF COURSE, OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH HR IN OUR HR AWARENESS CAMPAIGN.
ALL OF THESE SPECIFIC CAMPAIGNS INCLUDE PRINTED COLLATERAL, VIDEO COLLATERAL, DEDICATED WEBSITES, SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS, AND EMAILS, TEXTS, AND NEWS RELEASES FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THE A THROUGH F AWARENESS CAMPAIGN.
>> HI, I'M BRIAN. I'M A FRESHMAN WHO GOES TO FRONTIER STEM ACADEMY.
I'M AN ADMIN CAMPUS AND HOW DO CAMPUSES GET RATED?
>> I'M GLAD YOU ASKED BECAUSE WE'VE HEARD THAT QUESTION MANY TIMES.
TEA HAS AN A THROUGH F ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM THAT THEY USE TO RANK CAMPUSES.
CAMPUSES ARE JUDGED IN THREE DOMAINS.
THE FIRST DOMAIN IS STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT, AND THAT'S REALLY HOW DO STUDENTS PERFORM ON THE STAR TEST AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL THAT ALSO INCLUDES A COMPONENT CALLED CCMR, WHICH IS COLLEGE CAREER MILITARY READINESS.
THE SECOND COMPONENT IS SCHOOL PROGRESS AND THAT REALLY MEASURES HOW STUDENTS AT THAT SCHOOL ARE PERFORMING AND GROWING COMPARED TO STUDENTS LIKE THEM AT OTHER SCHOOLS AND THEN THE THIRD DOMAIN IS CLOSING THE GAPS WHERE WE LOOK AT INDIVIDUAL STUDENT GROUPS AND HOW THEY ARE PERFORMING ON THE STAR TEST.
>> WE KNOW THAT THOSE A THROUGH F CHANGES THAT ARE COMING ARE COMPLEX AND THEY'RE PROPOSED AND THERE'S ALL DIFFERENT THINGS DEPENDING ON WHAT GRADE LEVEL YOUR STUDENT MIGHT BE SO OUR JOB IS TO HELP EXPLAIN THOSE FOR OUR COMMUNITY AND IF YOU CHECK OUT OUR WEBSITE OR IF YOU FOLLOW OUR SOCIAL MEDIA, YOU'LL SEE US CONTINUE TO ROLL OUT THE A THROUGH F FAQS WHERE MS. YOUNG GETS MANY STUDENTS AND PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT SOME OF THOSE UPCOMING CHANGES.
WHILE WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO MARKET WHO WE ARE, WE ALSO, AS MR. WILLIAMS SHARED, WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR BUSINESS PARTNERS TO PARTNER WITH US AND SHARE THEIR BRAND AND IDENTITY THROUGH ADVERTISING AND SPONSORSHIP WITHIN OUR DISTRICT.
THAT COULD LOOK LIKE A COMMERCIAL AT NEWSOME STADIUM OR RLE ANDERSON.
IT COULD LOOK LIKE AN AD IN A MAGAZINE OR ON OUR WEBSITE OR IT MIGHT LOOK LIKE THEM CO-SPONSORING AN EVENT WITH US WHETHER THAT'D BE A BACK-TO-SCHOOL BASH OR SUPPORTING EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION.
ADVERTISING REVENUE FOR US IS ALSO PART OF OUR CADENCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND OUR SCORECARD IS FOR OUR DEPARTMENT.
OUR GOAL FOR THIS YEAR IS JUST UNDER 215,000 TO BE RAISED AND AT THIS POINT WE'RE JUST OVER 168,000, WE'RE ON TRACK TO MEET OUR GOAL, AND A LITTLE-KNOWN FACT, DID YOU KNOW THAT IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS THROUGH ADVERTISING AND SPONSORSHIP IN MANSFIELD ISD, WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO RAISE MORE THAN A MILLION DOLLARS FOR OUR BUSINESS PARTNERS TO BE ABLE TO GO BACK TO DIRECTLY SERVE OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF.
THAT IS A NUMBER THAT WE ARE VERY PROUD OF.
SPEAKING OF STUDENTS AND STAFF, ONE OF THE THINGS WE ALSO LOVE TO DO AS YOU KNOW BECAUSE YOU SEE ME HERE EVERY MONTH WITH STUDENT RECOGNITIONS AND STAFF RECOGNITIONS BUT PART OF THAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR US IN BUILDING THAT OWNERSHIP AND TRUST IN THE DISTRICT, CREATING A POSITIVE LEARNING AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT FOR BOTH OUR KIDS AND OUR PARENTS, AND OUR STAFF AND WE DO THAT THROUGH BOARD RECOGNITIONS, BUT WE ALSO DO THAT THROUGH OUR EMPLOYEE AWARDS BANQUET.
PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR MAY 11TH RIGHT HERE IN THIS VERY SPACE.
WE'LL BE RECOGNIZING OUR SERVICE AWARD WINNERS OUR HEARTBEAT AWARD WINNER SHINING STAR TEACHERS OF THE YEAR, COMMUNITY PARTNERS, AND MORE.
OUR TEAM ALSO LEADS THE TOP SCHOLAR'S AND DISTINGUISHED EDUCATOR'S EVENT.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR MAY 15TH, ALSO RIGHT HERE IN THIS VERY ROOM WHERE WE'LL RECOGNIZE THE TOP SCHOLARS FROM EVERY CAMPUS AND THEIR MOST INFLUENTIAL EDUCATOR IN THEIR EDUCATIONAL CAREER HERE IN MANSFIELD ISD.
THE LAST PART ALL SHARE IS ABOUT OUR BOND PROGRAM.
YOU MAY REMEMBER THAT OUR 2017 BOND PASSED WITH 65% APPROVAL RATING, WHICH IS THE HIGHEST APPROVAL RATING AND MSD HISTORY AND OF COURSE, WE PASS THE VATRE IN NOVEMBER OF '21, DESPITE CHALLENGES THAT WE FACE THE MONTH BEFORE.
THE BOND PROGRAM FOR US AND OUR ROLE IN COMMUNICATION REALLY EMPHASIZES EVERYTHING ELSE WE'VE TALKED ABOUT IS ABOUT BUILDING THAT RELATIONSHIP AND BUILDING THAT TRUST.
HAD WE NOT BEEN DOING THAT ALL ALONG AND WORKING TOWARDS THAT,
[02:00:04]
OUR BOND EFFORTS AND OUR VATRE MAY NOT HAVE HAD THE SUCCESS THAT THEY DO SO WE CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD AND FOCUS ON BUILDING THOSE RELATIONSHIPS.WITH THAT, I'M GOING TO TURN IT BACK TO MR. WILLIAMS.
REALLY WE ARE GOING TO MOVE ON TO COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND I JUST WANTED TO MENTION THAT, THE OLD ADAGE.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE AND IT TRULY DOES.
I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT MANSFIELD ISD REALLY EXEMPLIFY THE FACT THAT EVERYONE COMING TOGETHER DO GREAT THINGS FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES.
I WANT TO JUST POINT OUT A COUPLE OF EXAMPLES AS FAR AS WHAT'S COMING SOON TIED TO COMMUNITY RELATIONS.
A FEW MONTHS BACK, THE BOARD APPROVED THE POSITION FOR HEATHER CARSON.
HE WAS COMMUNITY RELATIONS COORDINATOR AND IT WAS ABOUT PARTNERS IN EDUCATION AND MENTORS, VOLUNTEERS, AND CONNECTING WITH OUR BUSINESS PARTNERS.
WE HAVE A STRONG LEVEL OF SUPPORT TIED TO PARTNERS IN EDUCATION, BUT WE'VE NEVER REALLY FORMALIZED THAT.
WHEN WE WERE COMING OUT OF AND GOING THROUGH COVID, A LOT OF OUR PARENTS SAID WE WANT MORE ENGAGEMENT, WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO FORMALIZE THAT, AND SO WE'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THAT AND YOU CAN SEE THAT AND THAT'S GOING TO BE COMING AND WE'RE SUPER-EXCITED ABOUT WHAT'S GOING TO TAKE PLACE THERE.
THERE ARE THOSE DATES ARE GOING TO KEEP COMING.
TUESDAY, MAY 2ND IF WE CAN GET THAT ON THE BOARDS CALENDAR, THAT'S SOMETHING THAT YOU'RE GOING TO BE INVITED OUT TO.
IT'S ABOUT CONNECTING AND PARTNERING WITH OUR GOVERNMENTAL OFFICIALS AS WELL.
WE HAVE THREE DIFFERENT MUNICIPALITIES THAT WE SERVE.
WE'RE GOING TO BE PARTNERING WITH THE CITY OF MANSFIELD AND WE'RE GOING TO INVITE THOSE REALTORS TO BE ABLE TO COME OUT AND REALLY GET TO HEAR OUR STORY AND THERE ARE ON THE FRONT-LINE FOR US.
THEY ACTUALLY ARE INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE ENGAGED AND HAVING CONVERSATIONS WITH OUR CURRENT COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND THEN ALSO THEY'RE RECRUITING AND SAYING, HEY, HAVE YOU CONSIDERED MANSFIELD ISD? THAT'S GOING TO TAKE PLACE AND IT'S JUST ANOTHER WAY IN WHICH WE ARE GOING TO ENGAGE WITH OUR COMMUNITY AND FORTIFY THOSE GREAT PARTNERSHIPS. SPECIAL EVENTS.
THESE ARE JUST TWO OF SEVERAL EVENTS THAT WE DO WITHIN THE DISTRICT, BUT THESE ARE TWO OF OUR SIGNATURE EVENTS.
ACTUALLY MANY OF YOU HAVE BEEN AT OUR BACK-TO-SCHOOL BASHES.
THIS IS AN EVENT THAT WE DO AS TO START OFF TO THE SCHOOL YEAR.
IT'S ABOUT ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY IN SUCH A WAY AND WE REFER TO IT AS OUR BACK-TO-SCHOOL BASH AND WE'RE GOING TO CELEBRATE PUBLIC EDUCATION.
I THINK LAST COUNT AT THE PREVIOUS ONE, WE HAD OVER 15,000 INDIVIDUALS THAT WERE THERE.
I'M A MORNING PERSON, SO I GET UP BRIGHTENED EARLY AND I KNOW THE TEAM NEVER LIKES TO GET THAT TEXT IN THE MORNING FOR ME ON BACK-TO-SCHOOL BATCH THEY HAVE 4:15 IN THE MORNING BUT IT'S IMPORTANT TO SEE IT AND HERE'S WHY.
THERE ARE PARENTS THAT ARE ALREADY THERE IN LINE TO GET AT BACK THERE.
ALREADY IN LINE TO GET A PAIR OF SHOES, AND SO IT'S JUST A REALLY FUN DAY OF CELEBRATING PUBLIC EDUCATION IN WHICH EVERYBODY IS COMING TOGETHER TO BE ABLE TO DO SO.
IT'S A HOUSE PARTY SO I THINK FOR THE CONVOCATION OF 2022 WAS HOUSE PARTY. IT WAS FUN.
YOU GUYS WERE THERE AS WELL WE'RE CELEBRATING THEM WITH US AND IT'S JUST THE BACK-TO-SCHOOL BASHES.
THAT EXTERNAL COMPONENT IS OF COURSE COMING TOGETHER.
CONVOCATION IS THAT INTERNAL PIECE OF IT OF COURSE COMING TOGETHER, SO IT IS TRULY A LOT OF FUN AND HERE'S AN EXAMPLE OF A QUICK VIDEO.
>> [MUSIC] I THINK WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT OUR BACK-TO-SCHOOL BASH IS IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO PARTNER WITH THE CITY, WITH SO MANY COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS AND ORGANIZATIONS JUST TO COME TOGETHER AND PROVIDE SO MANY WONDERFUL THINGS, NOT JUST THINGS BUT EXPERIENCES FOR OUR FAMILIES.
>> IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY FOR EVERYONE TO COME TOGETHER IN A CENTRAL LOCATION TO KICK OFF THE SCHOOL YEAR.
COMMUNITY PARTNERS, FAMILIES, FAITH PARTNERS, EVERYONE IS HERE TO PROVIDE EVERYTHING THAT OUR KIDS NEED AND ALSO TO PROVIDE A LOT OF FUN THINGS FOR THEM TO DO JUST TO GET THEM IN THAT BACK-TO-SCHOOL FEELING.
>> OUR BACK-TO-SCHOOL BASH IS SO SPECIAL AND SO GRAND.
WE ARE REALLY ON A MAP A VERY LARGE DISTRICT, AND IT ENCOMPASSES ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE AND ALL KINDS OF COMMUNITIES.
WE RAISED OVER $100,000 FOR THIS EVENT.
WE HAVE ALL KINDS OF DONATIONS FROM ALL KINDS OF ORGANIZATIONS.
>> FOR US, IT'S YOU NEVER ARRIVE.
IT'S ALWAYS ABOUT THE PURSUIT AND THAT REALLY EMBODIES WHAT WE BELIEVE WITHIN MANSFIELD ISD AND ALSO WITHIN THE COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING DEPARTMENT AS FAR AS CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT GETTING A LITTLE BIT BETTER EACH AND EVERY DAY.
I JUST WANT TO AGAIN SAY THANK YOU TO THE INCREDIBLE MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING TEAM.
I NEVER GET THIS OPPORTUNITY TO DO THIS, SO I WANT TO SAY A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE [APPLAUSE] FOR YOU GUYS.
I REALLY LOVE THAT WE'RE A SMALL BUT MIGHTY TEAM AND IT'S ALL ABOUT DOING GREAT THINGS FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES, AND WITH THAT WE WILL TAKE ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE.
>> WOW. THANKS. THAT WAS A LOT, SO A LOT OF POSITIVE TOO.
[INAUDIBLE] THAT ARE ON THIS END AND TRUSTEES, DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING?
[02:05:01]
I'VE GOT THIS SIDE. MS. ANDERSON.>> I JUST WANT TO SAY I THINK IT'S A TREMENDOUS ATTESTMENT TO THE THINGS THAT YOU-ALL HAVE BEEN DOING AND CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT THAT YOU'VE GONE TO A NEXT LEVEL [LAUGHTER] AS FAR AS TRYING TO KEEP OUR DISTRICT TO THE TOP AND TRYING TO KEEP OUR DISTRICT IN GOOD LIGHT AND TRYING TO KEEP OUR DISTRICT WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE TO MAINTAIN FOR US TO CONTINUE TO GROW.
I LOOK FORWARD BECAUSE SINCE WE HAVE THE MOVIE STUDIOS COMING UP THAT WE CAN EVEN DO MORE AND MORE TOGETHER TO BRING MANSFIELD INTO A GOOD LIGHT, SO GOOD JOB.
>> WELL, AS ALWAYS, THANK YOU GUYS.
I HOPE EVERYONE REALIZES HOW BROADLY YOU GUYS WORKED FOR OUR DISTRICT AND ALL THE MANY THINGS THAT YOU DO AND THANKS FOR ALL THE COST SAVINGS AND WE'LL GET THE WORD OUT.
WE APPRECIATE THAT ALWAYS, SO THANKS AGAIN SO MUCH.
>> WITH THAT, WE WILL MOVE ON TO ITEM 10 ON PUBLIC COMMENTS.
[10. Public Comments]
THE CORRECT PROCEDURE FOR DRESSING THE BOARD DURING PUBLIC COMMENTS IS AS FOLLOWS.EACH SPEAKER SHOULD ADDRESS THE BOARD FROM THE PODIUM MICROPHONE, AND STATE HIS OR HER NAME BEFORE SPEAKING.

BOARD POLICY PROHIBITS THE DISCUSSION OF COMPLAINTS AGAINST DISTRICT EMPLOYEES DURING AN OPEN FORUM.
I HAVE ONE COMMENT CARD AS I SAID THIS MORNING.
OUR SPEAKER FOR THIS EVENING IS AMY HEINE.
THAT APPEARS TO BE HE, I HOPE I'M SAYING THAT RIGHT.
I'M HOPING I'M SAYING THAT RIGHT BECAUSE I DON'T LIKE FOR SOMEONE TO MISPRONOUNCE MY NAME.
THEN WITH THAT, WE WILL MOVE ON TO ITEM 12.
MAKE ON MY NOTES DURING THE MEETING, I MISSED IT.
[11. Business Items Requiring Board Action]
