I'M HERE TONIGHT TO PRESENT ON GPM 4.1 AND I'M REALLY EXCITED TO SHARE SOME INFORMATION FROM THIS PAST SCHOOL YEAR. IF YOU'LL NOTICE, WE SET A GOAL. THIS WAS THE YEAR 2021. THIS WAS WHEN WE WERE DID ALL OF THE WORK AND LAID THE FOUNDATION FOR 100 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS TO BE INVOLVED IN OUR EXTRACURRICULAR AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES. AND THEN COVID HIT AND WE WEREN'T THERE. HOWEVER, I DO HAVE SOME VERY IMPORTANT AND POSITIVE THINGS TO SHARE WITH YOU GUYS REGARDING THIS GOAL. FIRST, WE MET OUR GOAL OF INCREASING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF ACTIVITIES THAT WE OFFER. AND SO THE GOAL WAS TO GET TO 85 BY THE JUNE OF 2021 AND AS A SECONDARY GOAL AND WE WERE AT 96. AND SO WE DO NOTICE IT ACTUALLY DECLINED A LITTLE BIT FROM THE YEAR BEFORE, BUT OUR CAMPUSES DID A GREAT JOB OF BEING ABLE TO MAINTAIN AND OFFER MANY OF THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES THAT THEY HAD PRIOR TO COVID JUST IN A DIFFERENT WAY. AND IF YOU'LL REMEMBER, AS I GO ON TO THE NEXT SLIDE, PRIOR TO THIS SPRING, WE WERE AT 66 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS PARTICIPATING. THAT'S WHAT I HAD REPORTED IN JANUARY. PRIOR TO COVID, WE WERE AT 90 PERCENT PARTICIPATING. WE WERE ON TRACK. WE WERE THERE. WE WERE WE WERE ON OUR WAY OF MAKING IT TO 100 PERCENT. AND SO WE WORKED WITH THE CAMPUSES AND WE WORKED SPECIFICALLY WITH OUR ELEMENTARY CAMPUSES THIS PAST SCHOOL YEAR. AND BY THE END OF THE SPRING WE WERE UP TO 77 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS STILL PARTICIPATING IN EXTRA AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES. AND SO WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF THAT. OUR CAMPUSES SHOULD BE VERY PROUD OF THAT. IN A YEAR THAT WE FACED WHERE MORE THAN 33 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE AT HOME, WE STILL FOUND A WAY TO KEEP THEM INVOLVED. AND I THINK THAT SHOWS, AS YOU'LL SEE TONIGHT IN JENNIFER YOUNG'S PRESENTATION ACADEMICALLY, HOW WELL WE PERFORMED EVEN IN THE SYSTEM OF COVID BECAUSE OF A LOT OF OUR EXTRACURRICULAR PARTICIPATION. AND SO YOU'LL NOTICE ON THE EVALUATION WE DID NOT MEET, BUT I'LL SHARE WHAT OUR NEXT STEPS ARE. AND WE DID INCREASE, AS I MENTIONED, 11 PERCENT FROM THE FALL TO THE SPRING. AND AS I MOVE FORWARD, WE'VE REDEFINED WHAT PARTICIPATION AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ARE FOR MANSFIELD ISD. THIS IS THE NEW DEFINITION WHICH YOU SEE BEFORE YOU. I JUST WANT TO POINT OUT WHAT THE MAIN DIFFERENCE IS, AND THAT IS IN THE FUTURE, WE WILL NOW ALSO COUNT STUDENTS THAT PARTICIPATE AND OFFICIALLY ORGANIZE CO AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, WHETHER THEY ARE CAMPUS OR NOT CAMPUS RELATED. WE HAVE MANY STUDENTS THAT PARTICIPATE IN GREAT EXAMPLE IS BOY SCOUTS. THE BOY SCOUTS IS A GREAT ORGANIZATION. THE PAST FIVE YEARS AS WE WENT WITH THIS GOAL, IF THAT STUDENT MAY GO ON TO BE AN EAGLE [00:10:02] SCOUT, GO ON TO A&M DO GREAT THINGS. THEY HAVEN'T COUNTED IN THIS GOAL. AND THE RESEARCH SHOWS THAT WHETHER IT IS A SCHOOL RELATED FUNCTION OR A COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION, IT STILL HAS A POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOUR EDUCATION AND HOW WELL YOU PERFORM AFTER SCHOOL. AND BECAUSE ONE OF OUR NEW GOALS IS COLLEGE AND LIFE READY. WE KNOW THAT MANY OF THESE ACTIVITIES ARE PREPARING OUR STUDENTS TO BE LIFE READY. AND SO WE'RE GOING TO INCLUDE THAT IN OUR NEW DEFINITION. AND SO THE NEXT AND LAST PIECE THAT I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT IS ON OUR STUDENT SCORECARDS, WHICH WE'VE HEARD A LOT ABOUT OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS. THIS WILL BE INCLUDED ON THEIR SCORECARD. SO STUDENTS WILL TRACK THEIR PARTICIPATION IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, WHICH IS GREAT FOR US, BECAUSE NOW IT GIVES US A MUCH MORE STANDARD WAY OF TRACKING THAT PARTICIPATION. SO BETTER DATA AND DATA THAT WE CAN NOW SEE AND DIVIDE UP WHAT THE ACTIVITIES ARE, WHETHER THEIR SCHOOL COMMUNITY. AND SO IN THE FUTURE, WHEN WE REPORT ON THIS, THERE WILL BE A LOT MORE IN-DEPTH DATA IN REGARDS TO PARTICIPATION. AND WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT. AND SO I KNOW WE NEVER LIKE TO FALL SHORT OF THE GOAL IN MANSFIELD, BUT THIS IS ONE THAT I THINK AS A DISTRICT WE SHOULD STILL BE PROUD OF OUR CAMPUSES SPECIFICALLY, NOT ONLY OUR CAMPUS LEADERS, BUT THOSE COACHES IN THOSE CAMPUS, YOU KNOW, THE SPONSORS OF THOSE ACTIVITIES BECAUSE THEY WORKED REALLY HARD TO MAINTAIN STUDENT PARTICIPATION AND WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF THAT. AS YOU ALLOW FOR COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO COUNT AS MUCH AS CREDIT TOWARDS THE CO CURRICULAR PARTICIPATION, HOW ARE WE GOING TO ENGAGE THOSE ORGANIZATIONS LIKE BIG BROTHERS, BIG SISTERS AND BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB? HOW ARE WE GOING TO ENGAGE THEM SO THEY'LL KNOW THAT THERE'S SOME LEVEL OF ACCOUNTABILITY THAT THEY'LL HAVE TO MONITOR ON BEHALF OF THE STUDENT. SO WE'VE HAD A LOT OF DISCUSSION, ESPECIALLY AROUND INCLUDING THIS DATA ON THE STUDENT SCORECARD AND WE'VE DISCUSSED EVERYTHING FROM THIS WILL BE THERE WILL BE SOME SORT OF VERIFICATION PROCESS. RIGHT. THEY'LL SIGN OFF. SO IF I AM ACTIVE IN BOY SCOUTS, MY SCOUT LEADER WILL SIGN OFF. YES, HE'S PARTICIPATED AND REMAINS ACTIVE. AND AND WE WILL HAVE THAT INFORMATION READILY IF WE NEED IT. OTHER YOU KNOW, FOR THE MOST PART, WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT BASEBALL, IN EIGHTH GRADE, WE HAVE STUDENTS THAT PLAY BASEBALL WELL, WE DON'T HAVE BASEBALL IN THE SCHOOL, BUT WE KNOW THOSE COACHES IN MYBA PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN HELPING THOSE YOUNG MEN DEVELOP AND THE MANSFIELD ISD SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION AS WELL WITH THE YOUNG LADIES I COACHED IN IT. AND MANY OF OUR DISTRICT EMPLOYEES PARTICIPATE IN THAT. WE KNOW THAT THEY WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM HELPING US OUT IN THE ACCOUNTABILITY PIECE. AND SO I THINK, ONE, IT'S THROUGH OUR MARKETING RIGHT? WE LET THEM KNOW, HEY, WE WANT OUR STUDENTS IN MANSFIELD TO PREPARE AND TO PARTICIPATE IN YOUR ACTIVITIES. AND I THINK THIS WILL ALSO GIVE CAMPUSES MORE MOTIVATION TO ADVERTISE FOR THOSE GROUPS AND TO SAY, HEY, YOU CAN JOIN THIS AND IT HELPS WITH OUR PARTICIPATION AND EXTRA COCURRICULAR ACTIVITIES. AND SO I THINK THERE'S IT WAS A PIECE WE WERE MISSING AND NOW IT WILL JUST STRENGTHEN THOSE PARTNERSHIPS WITH THOSE GROUPS. SO YEAH MINE IS MORE JUST A COMMENT AS OPPOSED TO A QUESTION AND RANDALL I THANK YOU. THAT WAS MY QUESTION, KIND OF HOW ARE WE GOING TO KEEP SCORE. MY COMMENT IS SIMPLY THIS. AND I'LL BE HONEST YOU BRING UP A REALLY GOOD POINT BECAUSE THAT 77 PERCENT OF THOSE ARE KIDS THAT ARE PARTICIPATING WITH US. RIGHT. IF WE WERE TRACKING PRIOR TO THE OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES, TOO, WE WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH [00:15:02] HIGHER BECAUSE WE DO KNOW A LOT OF STUDENTS BECAUSE OF HOW COVID AND DIFFERENT PROTOCOLS HAD TO FOLLOW. THERE WERE SOME ACTIVITIES THAT WERE JUST REALLY DIFFICULT TO HAVE, AND STUDENTS DIDN'T SEEM TO HAVE THE SAME MOTIVATION TO PARTICIPATE. BUT THEY'RE STILL DOING THOSE THINGS OUTSIDE. AND SO I THINK THIS WILL HELP SHORE UP THAT THAT LIKE OF THAT PARTNERSHIP AND THE EXPECTATION FOR OUR STUDENTS AS WELL SO. KAREN. THANK YOU FOR THE PRESENTATION. AND MY GOODNESS, JUST PUTTING TOGETHER A LESSON PLAN WAS SUCH A CHALLENGE THIS YEAR, WHICH IS THE CORE COMPETENCY OF WHAT THE TEACHERS WERE SUPPOSED TO DO. AND ON TOP OF THAT, TO TRY TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO ENGAGE THE KIDS OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM. I MEAN, THAT IS VERY COMMENDABLE. SO I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR STAFF HEARD HOW MUCH WE TRULY APPRECIATE THEM TRYING TO ENGAGE STUDENTS IN A YEAR THAT WAS NOT VERY ENGAGING. AND SO I THINK THESE NUMBERS ARE REMARKABLE AND I'M VERY, VERY THANKFUL FOR THE STUFF THAT WE HAVE. I AGREE 100 PERCENT. AND SO NOW CAMPUSES CAN USE THAT ONE TO LOOK AND SEE WHO'S NOT INVOLVED. AND NOW FROM THERE, IT'S EVERY CAMPUS KIND OF TAKES A DIFFERENT APPROACH. RIGHT? IT'S OK. WHO ARE THE KIDS NOT INVOLVED. IS THERE A SIMILAR TREND AMONG THOSE STUDENTS? SO IS THERE AN AREA THAT WE'RE MISSING AS A CAMPUS WHERE WE COULD ADDRESS THAT? AND IT'S ALWAYS DIFFERENT, BUT THAT'S WHERE, YOU KNOW, WE LOVE BEING A DISTRICT OF CONTINUAL GROWTH. AND SO OUR DISTRICT, OUR CAMPUSES, THEY ALWAYS DO USE ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS. LOOK FOR ANSWERS AND THEN ADD AND LOOK FOR A WAY TO SUPPORT THOSE KIDS. AND SO I DON'T THINK THAT PART WILL CHANGE. I THINK IT WILL BE JUST MAKING SURE THEY THIS IS STILL A FOCUS BECAUSE THEY AS KAREN SAID, THE RESEARCH TYING STUDENT SUCCESS TO PARTICIPATION IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES IS SO STRONG, WHICH IS WHY WE FOCUS ON IT. AND WE HAD A GREAT MEETING WHERE SEVERAL OF US FROM CIA AS WELL AS STUDENT SERVICES, WE MET AND WE'RE LIKE, OK, BECAUSE THIS WILL BE A QUESTION. AND THIS WILL ALSO BE SOMETHING WE FACE BECAUSE CAMPUS LEADERS, THEY DON'T WANT TO JUST CHECK A BOX. RIGHT. THEY WANT TO MAKE SURE THEIR STUDENTS ARE REALLY PARTICIPATING IN THESE ACTIVITIES. BUT OUR DISTRICT HAS REALLY GROWN OUR CURRICULUM FROM THE GROUND UP. AND WE'VE DONE THAT WITH THE HELP OF SOME TREMENDOUS TEACHERS, AND AMAZING CURRICULUM COORDINATORS, DONNA O'BRIAN AND HER TEAM DO A FANTASTIC JOB. IF WE FOCUS ON THOSE THINGS, WE KNOW THAT THE SCORES ARE GOING TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES. AND SO TONIGHT YOU'RE GOING TO SEE SOME OF THE RESULTS OF THAT WORK. AND BEFORE I SHOW YOU THE RESULTS, I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT YOU KNOW HOW WE GET THE RESULTS ON A STAAR TEST OR AN END OF COURSE, EXAM. THERE ARE FOUR DIFFERENT PERFORMANCE LEVELS THAT A KID CAN ACHIEVE. THE FIRST ONE IS DID NOT MEET GRADE LEVEL. AND JUST IN PLAIN ENGLISH, THAT MEANS THE KID DIDN'T PASS. THEY DIDN'T PASS THE STAAR OR EOC EXAM. APPROACHES IS REALLY A CONFUSING TERM, BECAUSE A KID CAN SCORE APPROACHES GRADE LEVEL, THAT ACTUALLY IS A PASSING SCORE, BUT IF YOU ALL SEE UNDER APPROACHES, IT SAYS THAT THEY HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE OF THE COURSE CONTENT, BUT THEY MAY BE MISSING CRITICAL ELEMENTS. SO WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO PASS AND SO APPROACHES MEETS THAT PASSING MARK. BUT WE REALLY LIKE TO FOCUS AS A DISTRICT AS IT MEETS. AND YOU CAN SEE THE DEFINITION FOR MEET IS THEY HAVE STRONG KNOWLEDGE IN COURSE CONTENT AND THEY'RE PREPARED TO MOVE TO THE NEXT GRADE. AND SO WHEN YOU LOOK AT VISION 2030 AND HOW WE WANT STUDENTS ON GRADE LEVEL OR ABOVE, THAT'S WHY WE LOOK AT THE MEETS NUMBER, IT WOULD BE A LOT PRETTIER IF WE JUST SHOWED YOU APPROACHES NUMBERS BECAUSE THE APPROACHES NUMBERS ARE HIGHER. AND SO THE STATE CAME UP WHEN THEY CAME UP WITH THE A THROUGH F RATING SYSTEM, THEY CREATED A FORMULA THAT SAYS IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE AN A DISTRICT, YOU REALLY NEED ABOUT 90 PERCENT OF YOUR KIDS AT APPROACHES, 60 PERCENT AT MEETS, AND 30 PERCENT AT MASTERS. AND IF YOU CAN HIT THAT FORMULA, THAT CAN PRETTY MUCH LEAD YOU TO BEING AN A DISTRICT. SO AS WE'RE LOOKING AT THE MEET'S CATEGORY TONIGHT, KEEP IN MIND THAT THE STATE SAYS AT THE MEET'S LEVEL WE SHOULD HAVE ABOUT 60 PERCENT PASSING. OK, SO NOW LET'S LOOK AT THE NUMBERS. AND SO WHAT WE KNOW IS THE MAJORITY OF STUDENTS THAT ARE TAKING THAT EIGHTH GRADE TEST ARE TYPICALLY THE ONES THAT STRUGGLE A LITTLE MORE WITH MATH. WE ALSO KNOW AND SOMETHING THAT WE'RE PROUD OF IS WE HAD A 95 PERCENT PARTICIPATION RATE ON STAAR AND EOC. SO 95 PERCENT OF OUR KIDS SHOWED UP TO TEST. IN A LOT OF DISTRICTS, THEY WERE IN SOME CASES, PUSHING THE OPT OUT, TELLING KIDS YOU DON'T HAVE TO COME TEST. AND SO I THINK THE FACT THAT WE HAD 95 PERCENT OF OUR KIDS TEST IS PART OF THAT STORY. BUT NOW WE KNOW EXACTLY WHERE THEY ARE AND HOW WE CAN HELP THEM MOVING FORWARD. AND SO, AGAIN, WE OUTPERFORMED REGION AND STATE IN EVERY CATEGORY EXCEPT FOR THAT ONE EIGHTH GRADE MATH. SO WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE US AND WHERE ARE WE GOING FROM HERE? WE KNOW THAT WE HAVE GAPS THAT WE USUALLY DON'T HAVE. WE KNOW THAT WE HAVE KIDS THAT LOST A LOT OF FACE TO FACE TIME WITH TEACHERS. WE KNOW IN THE PANDEMIC THEY DIDN'T ALL GET TO SIT IN THE FLOOR AND PLAY WITH MANIPULATIVES AND WE DIDN'T GET TO HAVE STATION WORK. [00:40:01] AND SO A LOT OF THE THINGS THAT WE DO DAY IN AND DAY OUT IN OUR CLASSROOMS WERE INTERRUPTED LAST YEAR. AND SO WE KNOW THAT THIS YEAR GOING INTO IT, KIDS ARE GOING TO COME TO US WITH GAPS. AND AS I MENTIONED EARLIER, WE'RE ALREADY ADDRESSING THOSE IN OUR CURRICULUM. WE'RE ALREADY MAKING PLANS TO FOCUS ON THAT. BUT I WANT YOU TO NOTICE THAT THIS ISN'T SOMETHING THAT WILL BE FIXED IN ONE YEAR. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO CONTINUE TO WORK ON. BUT IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR US THAT WE DON'T FALL INTO A REMEDIATION MINDSET WHERE WE'RE JUST FOCUSING ON LET'S FIX THE PROBLEM. WE STILL HAVE TO FOCUS ON THAT TIER ONE INSTRUCTION IN THE CLASSROOM BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT KIDS TO FALL BEHIND BECAUSE, WELL, WE'RE PULLING THEM OUT OF CLASS TO TRY TO TEACH THEM SOMETHING THEY DIDN'T GET LAST YEAR. WE'VE GOT TO STILL STAY FOCUSED ON OUR TIER ONE INSTRUCTION. AND THAT'S OUR PLAN MOVING FORWARD. AGAIN, WE WILL ADDRESS THE GAPS. AND AGAIN, JUST KNOW THAT IT'S GOING TO TAKE A COUPLE OF YEARS TO RECOVER FROM THAT. I WILL TELL YOU THAT DR. CANTU HAS STATED TO US REPEATEDLY THIS SUMMER THAT OUR FOCUS THIS YEAR ON PEOPLE AND PEOPLE MATTER AND WE'RE GOING TO HAVE KIDS THAT COME INTO OUR CLASSROOM THAT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN IN AN ACTUAL PHYSICAL CLASS FOR 15 MONTHS. AND THEY'RE GOING TO COME TO US WITH INSTRUCTIONAL NEEDS, BUT THEY'RE ALSO GOING TO COME TO US WITH SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL NEEDS. AND SO WE'VE GOT TO BE PREPARED TO MEET THEM WHERE THEY ARE AND TAKE THEM WHERE WE NEED THEM TO BE. AND WE'VE GOT THE PEOPLE IN PLACE TO DO THAT. WE'VE GOT GREAT LEADERS ON THE CAMPUSES AND OUR PRINCIPALS. I THINK YOU CAN SEE ARE UP FOR THE CHALLENGE. AND I KNOW THAT THEY'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO HELP THOSE KIDS AND GET THEM WHERE THEY NEED TO BE. THE LAST THING I WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU, BECAUSE I WANT YOU TO UNDERSTAND AND HEAR THIS BEFORE YOU START HEARING FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS THAT MIGHT HAVE QUESTIONS. IN THIS LAST LEGISLATIVE SESSION, A HOUSE BILL WAS PASSED. HOUSE BILL 45 45 AND THIS HOUSE BILL REALLY ADDRESSES THREE THINGS. FIRST OF ALL, IT REMOVES GRADE LEVEL PROMOTION. IN THE PAST, IF I WAS A FIFTH GRADER OR AN EIGHTH GRADER, IF I FAILED STAAR, I COULD NOT GO TO THE NEXT LEVEL UNLESS A GRADE PLACEMENT COMMITTEE APPROVED ME TO MOVE TO THE NEXT LEVEL. SO PASSING 5TH AND 8TH GRADE STAAR WAS A REQUIREMENT TO MOVE ON. HOUSE BILL 45 45 REMOVES THAT GUIDELINE. AND SO WE NOW NO LONGER WILL RETAIN A STUDENT JUST BECAUSE THEY FAILED THE STAAR TEST IN 5TH OR 8TH GRADE. HOWEVER, THERE ARE TWO OTHER IMPORTANT PIECES OF LEGISLATION. PART OF THIS LEGISLATION MANDATES THAT ANY STUDENT WHO FAILED A STAAR OR EOC TEST HAS TO HAVE AN ACCELERATED LEARNING PLAN. SO IF KAREN MARCUCCI WAS AN 8TH GRADER THIS YEAR AND SHE FAILED READING AND MATH, SHE CAN STILL MOVE ON TO NINTH GRADE. BUT WHAT THIS HOUSE BILL STATES IS THAT SHE NOW HAS TO HAVE 30 HOURS OF ACCELERATED LEARNING FOR MATH AND SHE HAS TO HAVE 30 HOURS OF ACCELERATED LEARNING FOR READING. AND SO. ANOTHER CAVEAT IS WE CAN'T PULL HER OUT OF HER CLASSES TO GIVE HER THIS ACCELERATED LEARNING AND WE CAN'T TAKE HER OUT OF ELECTIVES TO GIVE HER HER ACCELERATED LEARNING. SO WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON RIGHT NOW WITH PRINCIPALS IS HOW CAN WE MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS WITHIN THE SCHOOL DAY? AND THEN IF WE CAN'T GET ALL 30 OR 60 HOURS IN THE SCHOOL DAY, HOW CAN WE ADDRESS THAT WITH AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING? AND SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE GETTING READY TO SUBMIT TO SUBMIT TO MS. TRONGAARD IS SOME REQUESTS FOR ESSER FUNDS TO HELP US WITH THAT TUTORING AND THOSE EXTRA INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS THAT WE MIGHT NEED. PART OF 45 45 ALSO STATES THAT IF KAREN MARCUCCI OPTED OUT OF THE STAAR TEST. AND AS AN 8TH GRADER, SHE SAID, DAD, I DON'T WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL AND TAKE THE TEST. AND SO WE'RE GETTING READY TO COMMUNICATE WITH PARENTS WHOSE KIDS FALL INTO THIS CRITERIA. AND SO I JUST WANT YOU TO BE AWARE THAT WE'RE FOLLOWING THE LETTER OF THE LAW AND WE'RE GOING TO MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR KIDS. AND WE'RE BEING VERY CREATIVE ABOUT HOW WE CAN DO THAT IN THE SCHOOL DAY, BECAUSE THE LAST THING WE WANT TO DO IS PULL THEM OUT OF BAND OR CHOIR OR ATHLETICS, BECAUSE WE JUST HEARD HOW IMPORTANT THOSE THINGS ARE FOR THEIR EDUCATION. FIRST OF ALL, I THINK WE KNEW KIND OF GOING IN THAT OUR OLDER LEARNERS MIGHT BE LESS IMPACTED JUST BECAUSE THEY ALREADY HAD THAT BASE KNOWLEDGE. AND WHAT WE FELT LIKE WERE OUR PRE-K, KINDER, FIRST, SECOND GRADE, THOSE WERE THE KIDS WHERE SO MANY OF THOSE FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS ARE DONE WITH THEIR PEERS. THEY'RE DONE THROUGH COLLABORATIVE LEARNING. AND SO WE REALLY BELIEVE THAT THAT IS SOMETHING WE HAVE TO FOCUS ON MOVING FORWARD, GETTING BACK TO GETTING YOUR HANDS DIRTY AND WORKING WITH STATIONS AND WORKING WITH MANIPULATIVES.
